go on mlsli.com and look for houses for sale in that area, it tells u the taxes for each house. seems like taxes are pretty decent there compared to western long island
i dont know if this link will work for you, but its a 6 bedroom 3 bath contemporary in southhampton, on .70 acre with inground pool. $680k with $6000/yr taxes

yes. some parts of the country, a 3000 sq ft house will cost under $1000 a year in property tax. some places on long island, that same house will cost you over $10,000 a year in taxes, and even alot more.. million dollar plus houses can have taxes of $25,000

Do you feel being from Long Isalnd that the taxes are fair relative to what you receive there? Is $10, 000 in taxes fair for a 3000sq ft home there?

yes, i have read that people have been challenging their property assessments, and if it is over assessed, the taxes get lowered. thats going to be my first step after i get my first house.

The education system in NY is much better than most of the country, which is a big part of the property taxes.

I recommend that you check out Zillow for property tax data - they have the actual amounts that people paid and you can go from house to house to see the difference. Just remember that the info would be from the previous year so you should expect the current year's taxes to be higher - not sure you could really know by how much though.
