Default Child with Asthma

Hi,

My daughter who is three years old has Asthma. I had it when I was a kid but my parents never gave any medicine to me. But daughter takes Nebulizer treatment ( Pulmicort & Albuterol). My daughter takes so much medicine at three years. It seems she gets asthma during the month of Sept to April. During the spring time and summer time she is fine.

I did some research on the Pulmicort & Albuterol, there is lot of side affects. Just wondering if you know any one who took this kind of medicine and how old are they now? Do they still have Asthma?

Also interested if any of your tried any alternative medicine?

Please advice. Thanks

My daughter (now 4 1/2) has intermittent asthma (about 1-2 episodes per year). She has an episode that requires albuterol and some kind of prednisone twice a year-- every August (allergies) and usually at least once during the winter.

I hate albuterol-prednisone combination. I don't know about its long-term effects, but the short term effects are enough to want me to prevent them at any cost. My nurse-practitioner's son has asthma and his doctor prescribed a low dose of Singulair as a preventative, to be taken during the peak of allergy season. I don't know if that is an off-label use, but we decided to give it to her during her most susceptible months. My daughter hasn't had an episode since.

Asthma affects everyone differently, so this might not work for your child, but you could try asking your pediatrician about it.

Good luck.

Amoret

Prednisone is not nice. It's a steroid and should only really be used in extreme episodes. I had asthma when I was younger not so bad though and I grew out of it. Now it's only very rare that I have an issue thats easily handled by albuterol. My brother on the other hand has severe episodes and was on pred. for extended periods. he's never really gotten over it and it affects his life significantly. From my experience I'd say to stay as far away as possible from prednisone. If she goes to the ED for an attack suggest Magnesium sulfate instead of a steroid. It seems to work in most cases. Good luck

Thank you for the reply. My daughter took Prednisone few times already, Sickofnyc99 said your brother took for extended periods and affected his life significantly. If you don't mind, can you tell me few things that has happened to him.

As an asthma sufferer, I can definitely sympathize and understand. I have a portable treatment machine which uses Albuterol Sulfate solution and I gotta tell you it makes you jittery after just one use! It lasts a few minutes. I use that as needed which is (thankfully) not too often, but it does work.

My inhaler I tote in my purse is Proventil and is ok. My mother uses Advair now after using Albuterol inhalers in the past and her attacks have virtually stopped. On the website it says it's safe for children 4-11 for use.

Thank you so much for every one reply. My wife and I decided to go into alternative (natural) medicine. We are thinking of using " Homeopathic"

Just curious, did any one use Homeopathic and know any good doctors around L.I?

Thanks again.
