My daughter (now 4 1/2) has intermittent asthma (about 1-2 episodes per year). She has an episode that requires albuterol and some kind of prednisone twice a year-- every August (allergies) and usually at least once during the winter.
I hate albuterol-prednisone combination. I don't know about its long-term effects, but the short term effects are enough to want me to prevent them at any cost. My nurse-practitioner's son has asthma and his doctor prescribed a low dose of Singulair as a preventative, to be taken during the peak of allergy season. I don't know if that is an off-label use, but we decided to give it to her during her most susceptible months. My daughter hasn't had an episode since.
Asthma affects everyone differently, so this might not work for your child, but you could try asking your pediatrician about it.
Good luck.
