Is Farmingville safe?
Hi. I'm a 19 year old female considering an apartment in Farmingville. But a few people have told me it's a bad neighborhood and unsafe for a young girl to live alone. I know of the general controversy over violence against minorities there, but I am just a typical white LI girl. Do you think it would be unwise to live there? Do you think I'd be in danger? Please let me know! Thanks!

Farmingville in general is very safe... the "reputation" you mention is around the pockets of day laborers you see grouped up in certain areas up and down North Ocean Ave. Unless these guys suspect you are looking to hire them (at which point they'll mob your car), they are generally very respectful and timid. They're not the types to be hooting and hollering at you as you get out of your car... you can get that from "typical white LI boys" anywhere.

Haha, that's true. I am used to rude perverts honking and whatnot. But I am worried about more dangerous things, like driveby shootings, gang violence, robbery, mugging, rape, etc. I have no problem with a large minority population, but there is a reputation that the groups in Farmingville are particularly hateful of Americans and violent etc.
I hope I do not come off ignorant or racist. I'm just trying to be realistic (while I normally lean towards idealism). I mean no offense of course!

It might help to be a bit more specific about where in Farmingville... The "unofficial" line dividing Farmingville is Nichol's Road, with the "better" area West. I live East of Nichol's Road and I can tell you there is no "driveby shootings, gang violence, robbery, mugging, rape, etc" around here even though it's the "worse" side. My wife goes to 7-11, supermarket, etc alone - after dark even!
You could point out the large minority population along Horseblock Rd, but these folks are not gang bangers. I'd be concerned as you get into Medford, but in Farmingville I would honestly say you shouldn't have an issue.
It's funny how one very large national incident that was consequently turned into a movie years ago still puts a stigma on the town. It seems you're thinking in terms of Wyandanch type areas... Farmingville is Sachem schools - a very good district.

Poverty begets poverty.
Id hate to think what could happen there if the economic downturn continues.
With that being said ,my wife plays soccer at the indoor league with no problems.
So as far as safety goes....youd be fine.
Farmingvilles not Compton or the South Bronx.
It just gets a bad rep because of the illegal population.
However there are nicer places to live and unfortunately dollar for dollar theres no real compelling reason to choose Farmingville over its neighboring towns.

Curious as to what you're basing this on... Having lived in Farmingville for several years now, I'd say that it is dollar for dollar the best value compared to ANY of it's neighboring towns.

Disappointing... I'd hope you'd defend that position with something - anything as I'm honestly curious which neighboring town you're referring to. Medford, Coram, Selden? There's no way you could defend those v. Sachem schools.
Holbrook/Holtsville maybe? I could actually see that one, but they share the same schools and I think the stigma on Farmingville gets you better bang for the buck.
Stretching neighboring into the south - Patchogue? no way... maybe further NorthWest/NorthEast. Centereach? no way... Rocky Point? no way... Anway, once you get up into Setauket / Stony Brook / Miller Place /etc you lose the neighboring association and the convenience to LIE. It's not near a fair comparison.

Well, I honestly don't care about illegal immigrants being around. I just want to mind my own business and not have to pay over my limit for rent every month. As long as no one is going to hurt, rob, or kill me, they can abide by the law to whatever extent they choose, and I'm not going to get involved. That's all I need to know. That I am not putting myself in danger.
Thanks for your answers so far. =)
