My agent took us out to WH but I wasn't sold on the area or SD.

Asking about the Malverne school district will undoubtedly get you negative feedback but most posters are referring to the state of the district 10-15 years ago. My children are in the Malverne SD and we are very happy there. The elementary schools have exceeded expectations, the middle school is solid but many parents have issues with middle school beginning in 5th grade. You need to know that the middle school does not have a junior hs feeling to it. 5th and 6th are self contained for the most part but it is still difficult sending our young ones to school with 8th and 9th graders. The HS needs work but there is a new principal and administrative team in that has already begun to change the culture there. I'm several years from HS but feel confident they are moving in the right direction. Check the scores and teacher/student ratio. The diversity is increasing. In the past when the school started performing very poorly most Malverne parents pulled their kids out and the district was overwhelmingly minority. That has begun to change and there is a healthy mix of AA, caucasion, hispanic and some asian and indian students. We are very happy in Malverne schools.

It does not appear that any part of the Hamlet of West Hempstead is in the Malverne Union Free School District, and I'd guess that the house you were shown is in the Hamlet of Lakeview ("West Hempstead, NY 11552" mailing address) that is in the Malverne Union Free School District.

Walter yes the house we saw is close to the LIRR Lakeview branch. Is Lakeview supposedly part of W. Hempstead? Is this the case of having Valley Stream 11580 but an Elmont school district?

Despite the overwhelming support for VS I have another question. Does anyone know about the W.Helpstead Lakeview neighbourhood, just off Woodfield Rd.

I live in WH. Just bought a house there . When we were looking at researched both areas and in the end decided on WH. Any place that you go on LI there will be bad pockets.

For those who may not be familiar with Lakeview

Tess22, Lakeview is a hamlet, just like West Hempstead is a hamlet, with the difference being that while there is a "West Hempstead, NY 11552" ZIP Code postal zone, there is no "Lakeview, NY" ZIP Code postal zone, and hence all places in the Hamlet of Lakeview have other than a "Lakeview, NY" mailing address.
For those who may not be familiar with Lakeview:
Lakeview is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the center section of the Town of Hempstead, in the southwest part of Nassau County.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Lakeview in the Town of Hempstead is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of Malverne-Oaks and the Hamlet of West Hempstead; on the east by the Village of Rockville Centre; on the south by the Village of Rockville Centre and the Village of Lynbrook; and, on the west by the Village of Malverne.

Lakeview is one of those many villages and hamlets on long Island where none of the places in the community have the hamlet name as part of their mailing address: places in the Hamlet of Lakeview have a "West Hempstead, NY 11552" and "Rockville Centre, NY 11570" mailing address.
For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): Excellent Long Island Geographic Resource

Tess22, while a small part of the Hamlet of Elmont has a "Valley Stream, NY 11580" mailing address, I'm guessing that the area you are asking about is in the Hamlet of North Valley Stream, and just like the Hamlet of Lakeview where there is no "Lakeview, NY" ZIP Code postal zone, and hence all places in the Hamlet of Lakeview have other than a "Lakeview, NY" mailing address, there is no "North Valley Stream, NY" ZIP Code postal zone, and hence all places in the Hamlet of North Valley Stream have other than a "North Valley Stream, NY" mailing address.
For those who may not be familiar with North Valley Stream:
North Valley Stream is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the northwest part of the Town of Hempstead, in the west part of Nassau County, along the Nassau/NYC (Queens County) line.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of North Valley Stream in the Town of Hempstead is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of Elmont and the Hamlet of Franklin Square; on the east by the Village of Malverne; on the south by the Village of Valley Stream; and, on the west by New York City (the Nassau/Queens County line).

I grew up in Valley Stream and lived there from 1976 to 1995. I went away to college and life took over and stayed living out of state, BUT I still have family in Valley Stream and visit twice a year. Valley Stream esp school district 24 and 13 are beautiful well kept areas. The demographics have changed somewhat, but to me that is a plus. The schools are highly rated, crime is extremely low (just check the FBI crime database) the houses are well kept up, the town has a very neighborly and small town feel and the access to Manhattan is great.
I grew up in the Gibson section of Valley Stream on the border with Hewlett. Im a little biased, but I would choose Gibson . I miss Valley Stream A LOT
