Malverne was rated in Newsday very recently as one of the few districts most in need of improvement on Long Island. Most people in Malverne (any race) send their kids to private school if they can afford it, so that's considerable money spent on tuition on top of high taxes that directly go to the school district. IMO, considering the taxes we pay on Long Island, people should vote with their feet and choose not to become part of a crummy school district. Nobody gets a tax break when they live in the inferior school districts. The taxes are the same or sometimes higher than in the better regarded school districts.
Maybe if new people avoid buying into inferior school districts and existing residents protest the crappy service they are getting for their high tax dollars, IT WILL GIVE THE PEOPLE RUNNING THE SCHOOL DISTRICTS THE INCENTIVE TO DO BETTER.
FOR THE PRICE OF THE TAXES ON LONG ISLAND, I FIRMLY BELIEVE NO SCHOOL DISTRICT SHOULD BE INFERIOR.
Also, the school district your house is in DOES AFFECT YOUR CHANCES AT RESALE AND THE VALUE OF YOUR HOME. It is an unwise investment to purchase a home in an inferior school district (even if you DO NOT have kids) if you can afford a home in a better one.

Lakeview is not a good area. Avoid it altogether.

I worked at Valley Stream Central High School and it did a nice job of educating the students. I would be wary of West Hempstead. ]

It's funny, but the area I've been through (on the way to West Hempstead) looks nice. I forget the road, but part of it is on the N15 line. The nice area stops before you get near the Courtesy Motel.

For those who may not be familiar with Lakeview:
Lakeview is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the center section of the Town of Hempstead, in the southwest part of Nassau County.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Lakeview in the Town of Hempstead is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of Malverne-Oaks and the Hamlet of West Hempstead; on the east by the Village of Rockville Centre; on the south by the Village of Rockville Centre and the Village of Lynbrook; and, on the west by the Village of Malverne.
Lakeview is one of those many villages and hamlets on long Island where none of the places in the community have the hamlet name as part of their mailing address: places in the Hamlet of Lakeview have a "West Hempstead, NY 11552" and "Rockville Centre, NY 11570" mailing address.
For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html

So can Lakeview kids go to either Malverne, West Hempstead or Rockville Centre schools?

So Lakeview is a mixed bag of a community?

You are describing the Rockville Centre border of Lakeview.

They all go to the Malverne School District. However, interestingly enough, on MLSLI.com – Long Island Real Estate – Find A Home in Nassau, Suffolk & Queens (Long Island's Multiple Listing site), the homes in Lakeview do not have their own category and are instead categorized as Rockville Centre. (I can see Walter Greenspan shaking his head right now!)

Let me put it this way, if you like Roosevelt or Uniondale, you might like Lakeview. For me no way would I waste my money, especially with the property taxes being just as high as in a nicer and more stable neighborhood.

Interesrting......So, is the average family income is low for LI? It's at just under 69,000 per family. 4.9% of the families and 6.3% of the people in the community live below the poverty level.
