Lake Ronkonkoma, Hawkins Ave?
I'm interested in a home about a mile and a half north of LIE on Hawkins Ave.? I think is about a half mile or more from the Lake. Anyone know how this area is and if this road is extremely busy or dangerous? Also, how is Lake Ronkonkoma to visit. I see there are parks around it and it is a huge lake. Is it nice to go to?

It is a busy road. Not extremely dangerous, but your kids certainly wouldn't play there and a toddler running into the road would be in eminent peril. I would not buy a house there, being that I have a 2 year old.
The parks around the lake have been renovated and are nice to take kids to now. The place was a dump for about 20 years prior to a few years ago. You can tell what went on here regularly because the shoreline is still littered with broken glass..it was basically a place for young adults to drink. Now, however, there are 2 great playgrounds, one at Raynor beach and the other on the North side off Portion Road, and I think that security and patrols are making the area less of a hangout.
the park on the ocean avenue side is nice too, but the handball and basketball courts there lead to it being a war zone during the summer..booming stereos, young wanna-be tough guys cursing it up, all that sub-ghetto nonsense.

I know that this is a bit off topic, but I remember Lake Ronkonkoma from the 1960's. It was then surrounded by privately owned beaches that you would pay a fee in order to go to for the day. My family used to travel out from Lynbrook (which then took about 2 hours) and spend the day at Jack Yerks beach. I remember two big slides in the lake that us kids would play on. Really good memories.

I think it started to go downhill in the 70's. When I was a kid, no one would swim in there because supposedly a lot of dumping was going on.
It's a shame that it was allowed to deteriorate..having a lake right in the middle of Suffolk is pretty nice. People pay big bucks up in New England to live on a lake.

Yes, it is definately a public asset that was allowed to deteriorate. It used to be really nice.

Dman is correct regarding Hawkins. Lake Ronkonkoma is fine, but Hawkins is a very busy main road. As they say in real estate it is all about location. I also second the improved/new playground off of Portion. It is great for the kids. We play there often with friends in Nesconset.

Oh, also, the Raynor Beach park: there is a playground by the water, and two up the stairs on the other side of Shore Rd., one near Shore Road and oe down by ronkonkoma Ave. The ones up the stairs are better, completely new. Really nice work by the municipalities there.

I agree....Hawkins Ave. is very busy! And all the playgrounds around the lake area look great. All are brand new and landscaped very nice!

For those who may not be familiar with Lake Ronkonkoma

Well, now you're in the right community: the Hamlet of Lake Ronkonkoma.
Lake Ronkonkoma is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where none of the places in the community have the hamlet name in their mailing address, and that location on Hawkins Avenue appears to be in the Hamlet of Lake Ronkonkoma ("Ronkonkoma, NY 11779" mailing address), and not in the Hamlet of Ronkonkoma.
For those who may not be familiar with Lake Ronkonkoma:
Lake Ronkonkoma is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) partly in the southeast part of the Town Smithtown and partly in the center-west part of the Town of Brookhaven, in the central part of Suffolk County.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Lake Ronkonkoma in the Town of Smithtown and the Town of Brookhaven is bordered on the north by Hamlet of Nesconset in the Town of Smithtown and the Village of Lake Grove and the Hamlet of Centereach in the Town of Brookhaven; on the east by the Hamlet of Centereach and the Hamlet of Holtsville in the Town of Brookhaven; on the south and west by the Hamlet of Ronkonkoma in the Town of Islip (the Brookhaven/Islip Town line and the Smithtown/Islip Town line).
Lake Ronkonkoma is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where none of the places in the community have the hamlet name in their mailing address: places in the Hamlet of Lake Ronkonkoma have a "Ronkonkoma, NY 11779", "Nesconset, NY 11767", "Lake Grove, NY 11755" and "Holbrook, NY 11741" mailing address.
For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html

Isn't it odd that Lake Ronkonkoma (the body of water) isn't actually in Lake Ronkonkoma (the hamlet) ?
Sorry for going O/T, I wasn't alive back then, but I've seen pictures of the lake back in it's heyday and it really looked beautiful. It would probably do a great service to the surrounding areas if it were cleaned up and became a summer destination again.
