Many variables come in to play such as..do you have a large chunk of money for a down payment for a home? Will your family income be $120k a year or greater? If you answer yes to these to 2 important questions I would say you could live in a modest town anywhere in Suffolk Co. Just dont think your getting a 3,000 sq. ft house on the shore.
One also has to think about the commute to work. It can be brutal.
Good luck!

Thanks for the information. So bottom line, is that you must have some bucks ready to spend. I;m sure the commute can be brutal. I'm guessing there are no employment opportunities out on the island?

We should have a sticky that lists the bare minimum questions as this topic comes up a lot. There is a lot of information to had on the forum...and it needs to be narrowed down a bit.
Best of luck with your search...Suffolk is very large and as you might expect varies quite a bit in housing costs (high, higher and even higher :-)...
What kind of price range are you looking at and do you have an idea where you'd be working?

Come to my neck of the woods... Plainview
I absolutely love it in this area... Why?
Where I live Im 5 mins away from the 495, and NSP
I am 8 mins away from SSP
40 minutes (depending on traffic) from NYC
I enjoy being in the heart of Long Island. and housing is not highly priced out here

Plainview is nice but isnt it in Nassau?
I think Northeastern Brookhaven is a terrific value.
We love Rocky Point.
Best bang for the buck on the North Shore.
Miles of beachfront/5200 Acre Nature Preserve/60 miles from NYC/Good Schools/Reasonable Taxes/Breathtaking Waterviews... but above all a Fantastic sense of community
Best of luck in your hunt.

Thank you for the input. Releastically are there any jobs on the island out there or does it all center around the city?

Yes.
Suffolk has a few industrial hubs.
Melville, Hauppauge and very soon Yaphank.
These links offers some strong insight.

Nassau is more of a bedroom community but I think most of Suffolk works on LI.

FrankieDNY do you have a specific field of work? Do you know what kind of house you can afford? This would be crucial information for us to help find town that best fits your needs.
