Wind Chimes.....Love Them or Hate Them
My neighbor moved in about a year ago and she has this loud wind chime hanging on her tree. Whenever the wind blows like last night, this thing is going crazy. I can't sleep!!!! It's worse in the spring/fall when I have my windows open. The nights without wind is awesome.
Do you think I should approach them as ask them to take it down, deal with it or quietly make it disappear?
I'm sure the other neighbors are freaked out about it, but they have no idea where it's coming from. I know its location because the way our yards are set up, it's in the tree between us but on her side of the 6 foot fence.
What are your feelings about wind chimes that dominate the night and leave you mad tired in the morning?????

I love wind chimes as long as they are not loud ones. A little goes a long way.
I have three of them where we now live but they are all small ones with delicate light tones. Two of the three are hung right next to the house and unless the wind is very strong I doubt that anyone not actually standing somewhere in the yard would even hear them. The third one is in a corner that is at least 75 feet from both of the adjoining houses.
Also, I take the windchimes inside for the winter, figuring that both the wood and the strings will last a lot longer that way. I'm not in the garden then anyway, and we don't open windows during cold weather, so there's no point in leaving them out there from Nov through April.
I'm very sensitive to "noise pollution" and chimes such as your neighbors would drive me batty.
The problem with saying something is that if you do, and she does nothing about it (like say moving it to another corner), then if the chimes do eventually disappear... she will assume it was you who took them, whether you did or not.
Is there another tree in her yard that she could hang them from, that you could suggest? Maybe one closer to the street and further from your house?
Of course if the lots are 1/4 or 1/3 acre you're going to hear the chimes no matter where she puts them.

The neighbor probably doesn't realize that the noise can be heard in your home. Maybe you should just (nicely) explain that the sound from them is very loud and it's actually keeping you awake at night.
I don't have any wind chimes but if I did, I would prefer the little delicate ones.

Maybe with the wind, rain, snow....it will rot away.
I'm not one for really knocking on someones door. I wish they were the delicate tone ones, I lucked out with monster bells! argggh!
Happy Holidays to you all. Thanks for the replies. It's nice to know there are still considerate people left.

For around $30 at sears or home depot you can get one of those tree pruners with the extension pole.
If they suspect anything and question you just play dumb and tell them you've heard stories about squirrels that gnaw rope and run off with wind chimes..

It may be that the neighbor just doesn't realize that you can hear the chimes or that they can be unpleasant to people. I have quite a few in my yard, and if one of my neighbors complained, I'd relocate the chime(s) as needed. I would be upset though if someone 'made it disappear' some of the nice ones are not cheap! My suggestion would be to catch their attention when they are in the yard one day. Wish them a happy holiday, or complain about the weather for openers, then mention the wind chime. Also mention how the winter weather is apt to destroy said chime as well. Maybe they can put it away for the winter and relocate it somewhere less annoying in the spring.

I agree.
It's wrong to destroy someone else's property just because it's annoying to you. Not to mention against the law (and cowardly).
The simplest (and most effective) would be to speak to the neighbor about it. Chances are, they don't have any idea that the noise is annoying you or that you can even hear it.
It may be a little awkward to approach the neighbor at first but if you use a friendly approach, I'm sure things will work out fine.

Some of those are REALLY loud! I've heard them in store displays. Makes you feel like you're living next to a monastery.
Those big chimes, especially, are not cheap. I remember when I was shopping for the small "Zen" ones that I have, looking at some of the big deep toned Woodstock Chimes and they were about $200 each.

I'm not going to take their chimes and magically make them go away.
That wouldn't be nice, I was trying to be funny.
When I was at the Tropicana in A/C, this place called Zephyr was selling handmade ones and they were so beautiful. Very expensive. Wouldn't dream of leaving that outside. Someone stolen a garden piggy with wings from my front yard, wasn't expensive, but I loved it so! Imagine something of value to be taken.
If I see them in the yard, maybe I'll have the nerve to speak with them. They are nice people.
