These are working class men and women, people like you and me, with good paying jobs.

The concern isn't that they are paid too much, whatever that means. The concern is that they are paid MORE than the people complaining. They don't like that these people are living better than they are, and that they are footing the bill for what appears to be a relatively better lifestyle. That seems unfair to many, and I understand that.

The real problem here, however, is that people are making less. Cops aren't making more. Since 1970, salaries for working class people have declined. Because of strong unions in public sector jobs, however, allow police officers to be compensated in a manner inconsistent with national historical pay trends.

That GDP has continued to increase, even explode, since 1970 is rarely considered by those complaining. Moreover, the average American worker is more productive than most any other on earth, and we work longer hours. So we worker more, we work harder, and we are paid less.

Americans love a scapegoat. You are angry at the cops. I think that is fratricide. Blame Wall Street. Blame Republicans & Clinton. Blame right-to-work. Blame NAFTA. Don't blame the man/woman who patrols your street at 3:00 AM.

I think cop, firefighter, and union auto workers MUST exist to remind us about how our parents lived in the 50's and 60's and the promise that America once held.
I understand what your agenda is about the working class, and I hold many of the same opinions, but the problem is that too many SCPD and NCPD do not even view themselves as regular schlubs like our lunch pail dads....they think they are above that, and the main reason they do is because they are raking it in while other people struggle, and worse, they rub it in everyones faces. My dad was able to get job that paid enough to buy a house without a college degree, that pays him a modest pension, and my mom didn't have to work. We weren't rich, but we never went without and I even got an Atari 2600 before most kids on my block.

I'm not struggling, but then again, my wife is a teacher and I have a job that pays well in a fairly stable industry, but we both have to work to own a home, we both went to college, I have graduate credits and she has her masters.

A cop can make pretty close to what my wife and I make combined after 5 years with overtime. Use whatever term you want, jealousy, envy, fine, but these people are paid by the public....we're not talking about professional athletes who get paid what they do because there is a market for them.

My in laws and many other people I know are not faring so well. Now some people would go after my wifes profession, but AGAIN, there is no comparison in qualifications...there is definitely a high demand for these positions, no doubt, and there might still be if teachers salaries went down maybe 10%...but if you start going below that...you would see many people who choose that profession going elsewhere with their educations..instead of going into teaching, they'd go into nursing or business or something. Look at teachers in NYC..a whole different ballgame and far fewer people flocking to those positions.

As for Wall St....Wall St has been the true constituency of the last 4 Presidents...the attitude for the last 25 years has been what's good for rich people and good for Wall St is good for everybody else. It was a lie from day one and way to shift even more wealth to those who already own everything.

I'm not sure you are directing this at me... but if you are, where exactly did I ever say the cops have an easy job? They don't have an easy job. I just don't think the compensation package needs to be so enticing that

30,000

people sign up for 200 spots! That should tell anybody that the market dynamics are not in sync.

Here's the thing though Mike... the cops will still protect your a** even if they are paid slightly less. The cops won't stop doing their job. Their jobs would still be done. They will just be done for a little less money, that's all.

I totally agree with you. Keep in mind these aren't attacks on the police. These are attacks on their compensation, which is excessive. We on LI are among the highest taxed citizens in America. It's time to find these excesses, expose them, and get these wrongs righted.

Back to my original point in the thread:

1. We just moved in and the ice was already 3 inches thick.
2. My wife is indeed pregnant and I spent hours trying to chip the ice and melt it to no avail.

We called up the cops explaining all this after they gave us the warning (which they said someone walking by phoned in)...and the cops still said TOO BAD.

I don't expect the cops to know our personal situation of just having moved there. But we PHONED them up and they were still Moderator cut: language
about it. That's what I was pissed about. That's overkill in my mind.

A bag of rock salt spread on the ice, wait 5 minutes and it would've came right off with a shovel.

I couldn't have said it better myself. Just one question. You said:

We are talking about Nassau and Suffolk and you mention national pay trends. Does the "inconsistently higher pay" go for police in the rest of the country? If not, why haven't they also been able to get what Nassau and Suffolk police have?

Peter B,

I did that. No affect. Do you recall the ice storm of the 19th? We moved in on the 20th. The rock salt just sat on 3 solid inches of ice (like hockey rink ice). I chipped away at it with a steel shovel. All I did was almost break my wrist and probably my sidewalk..getting nowhere. (It was brutal cold that week.)

The point is...I made the effort..even after just moving in. Show some mercy. I love GC, and I'm very happy there, but those cops were unreasonable on that one...especially since I called and explained to them. Oh well.

Tell me, when a Police Officer responds to a call from you, are you going to carp, to his face, about how he is paid too much, to be there, to save your ingrateful butt ?
