How much do people generally get here?
Glad to hear you have a million in general liability.
However, you live in Garden City--sounds like "big $$$" to anyone who is out to sue and, in my professional opinion, is not enough.
An umbrella for another million is fairly inexpensive (maybe around $200/yr, or even less) and could give you more peace of mind.
Worth giving it some thought??

Get "Driveway Heat", works great on ice. As a pedestrian it is difficult when people dont clear there walks. You could move to Westbury, even on Post Ave, the main street, there alot of ice on the walks and the village does nothing.

NYC gives you 4 hours after end of snowfall to clear sidewalks. Many villages including Bellerose Village give 24 hours to clear snow from sidewalks. I thought Town of Hempstead (in the inincorporated areas) also gave 24 hours to clear snow. This is not just a Garden City rule.

I'd pack my bags and put the FOR SALE sign right back up on the lawn, too funny.....or do you get a summons for having one of those too?

I also knocked my two front teeth out slipping on someone's iced up sidewalk once, it never occurred to me until now that I should have sued!

just kidding, I would never do that

No excuses. If you own a home with a sidewalk, you need to keep it clear. Lots of folks who move here from elsewhere are quite suprised when they find out they need to do keep it clear. Too many folks are very lazy about upkeep.

Congrats on the move in.......I think there was a 50% chance the police just saw your sidewalk and informed you....no neighbor complaint. GC police are kinda like that.....

Just hire somebody to get rid of the ice.
If they have something better to do, why harass this person? I agree that it's a nuisance when people don't clear the sidewalk, but give it a day or two after the snowstorm. Not everyone has a cushy schedule like the police do.

With the cold temps, it is really really thick ice. Over the weekend I tried to break it up with a shovel and salt. Could barely make any dents.

So...what happens...yesterday we get a Warning from the GC Police that our sidewalk needs to be cleaned or we'll get a fine. Apparently, someone called and complained.

Are you kidding me? We just moved in, my wife is pregnant, and I can't chip through 3 inches of solid ice....and I have to worry about this?

These police really need to find something to do. And, if the people complaining knew that I just moved in during the storm, then they are real a-holes.
Remember just how much you expect from police if you ever find yourself complaining about your taxes. You think they should know how pregnant your wife is? Should they put out all points bulletins on the temporal proximity between your arrival and the accrual of ice?

This seems extremely petty.

No, but the OP just wants some time to clear the ice. Again, most people have a very busy schedule. To ask for 2-3 days after a snow storm isn't a big deal, especially when there is now ice on the ground which very difficult to remove.

Don't move there. Otherwise, you are asking the police to know the particulars of your situation. That's unreasonable. I'm willing to bet that if you want your police to work like the fellas down in Mayberry, you are going to have to pony up some tall taxes. As it is, you can't expect them to be nimble.

I suggest clearing your sidewalk. It's a pain in the a**, but not nearly as bad as a lawsuit from a mail deliverer.
