Very true; but the $450 wasn't for the actual work done, that was just the foundation expert's fee to come and do an inspection/report/suggestions for repair. I then called a number of companies to get estimates for the work itself.

Wish I could recall the special name of those spring-like things (the more expensive option). Basically the effect is the same as leaving jacks in place, as the previous poster described.
