I was told by an inspector that the ceiling tiles in our basement MIGHT have asbestos in them. He doesn't know how old they are. Just that there is the possibility as the house was built in 1953. Is this common? How can I tell? Do I have to send it to a lab?

I was planning on ripping them out when I moved in. Now I am not so sure.

If your inspector was a “state-certified asbestos inspector” – then I would trust his observation.

However, the ONLY way to know for 100% is to have the tile tested by an accredited laboratory; you can look in the yellow pages under "Asbestos Consulting & Testing".

Asbestos containing materials do not have to be removed from any residential property unless it will be disturbed during renovations activities. As long as the asbestos containing material is in good condition, intact, it does not pose a significant health risk.

This was not done by an Asbestos inspector it was done during my home inspection. I don't know for sure, but I doubt the inspector was a certified Asbestos inspector.

I would recommend having few tiles tested, its not very expensive.
