Too generic a question. Depends upon what you desire.

Having lived in both, Long Island hands down.
Much better value (believe it or not) and better beaches too.
If you havent been to the OC...imagine LI without the LIRR and when you get to the end of your 2 hour commute (to cover 15 miles on the 405) the City Moderator cut: language and its covered in a a blanket of smog.
No thanks.
People are too touchy feely/hypersensitive and they put avocados on their Pizza.
Welcome to dudeland.

But the weather, night life, amount of young people, etc in Orange County don't make up for the long commutes and pollution?

Spend five minutes in a riveting conversation with the local youth at the Irvine Jamba Juice and you tell me.
I think when it comes to the left coast...people watch too much reality TV.
Come the summer, Nightlife in the Hamptons blows OC away.
As for year round NYC is just a train ride way but LI has its fair share of cool downtowns.
The Weathers WAY overrated.
I like a change of seasons and Long Island is actually fairly mild for the Northeast.

PS
Did I mention earthquakes?
Im fairly confident OC will be its own Island soon enough.

I've never been to the Hamptons I didn't even know there was night life there. Thought it was only rich people houses and boutiques. Maybe I watch too much reality tv and start California dreaming.
Orange county just looks so fresh, clean, new. LI looks dull in comparison.

Try before you buy.
Dollar for dollar you'll find plenty of luster here if youre willing to drop money on a home with an OC pricetag.
They are similar....Long Island is just superior by virtue of its proximity to the greatest city in the world.
Nuff said.

OK I have to say California all the way ONLY When it comes to the weather... I hate cold weather and I hate the seasons... Id rather be nice and warm/hot all year around.
As far as anything else, I think Long island has it hands down... Nightlife, historical places, down to earth (some) people.. I would want to move to California however I know that I will definetly miss NYC/LI

You can keep the Hamptons and Orange County.... give me any local dive on LI where I can get a Budweiser for under five bucks and they still let you ash on the floor!
