Can you blame 'em for moving to Brooklyn/Queens...they grow up out here and realize theres nowhere for them to start out (Huntington: car insurance, how much)

That's what my fiance and I plan on doing. I'm currently in the city for work. I miss Long Island and want to move back. We're getting married in July, so we're looking to buy a house right now.
Nassau is looking more like Queens every day and the majority of Suffolk has an unbearable commute thanks to the Nassau County Rail Road.
NYC is a steal when youre not making 2 car payments with gas/ins etc.

Yes!
Take away car payments, car insurance, gas, car maintenance and TIME look at how much money you're saving. Not to mention, NYC has much, much, much more to offer children and families than LI ever could.

I hope your fiance is from Long Island as well. If he's NYC born and raised, he's going to hate it out here. He'll like it at first but when he realizes how LI lacks in everything, he's going to despise it after a while. Especially when he's paying mortage, LIPA, car payments, car insurance, etc, etc, etc. and sees that he's laying out 10s of 1000s a year for nothing.

He doesn't like the city at all. He likes Long Island and much prefers it. In general, the city is more expensive than LI anyway.
But is he originally from LI or NYC???? If he is NYC born and raised, he may "like" LI at first and even prefer it. However, after being out here for a time and seeing what it's all really about, he will change his tune.
I've been on LI for 11 years and I STILL don't feel "at home".... I will never, ever get used to being out here. Right now, though, all I can do is try to save some money to get back to NYC (or hit the Lotto)
I think the biggest reason 20-somethings are moving to Brooklyn and Queens is simply that there aren't decent rental options out here. Most 23 and 24 year olds I know are not in the market for $300,000 co-ops, they're looking for studio/1BR apartments or house shares....and for those, you're either living in someone's basement or you're stranded in the middle of nowhere.
The couple in that article make me want to vomit. Wah wah, we're hurting the environment so much by driving a nasty car, wah wah what about the polar bears? Get a grip you freaking hippie scumbags...
I was born on Long Island (Nassau), moved to the city. Lived in Manhattan & Forest Hills Gardens.
As much as I loved the city, it became a giant mall in some respects.. it is sort of losing character with a starbucks on every corner and you kinda need to dress up where ever you go. Landmarks that gave it character are disappearing as the yuppies take over. Have you been to the Bowery where CBGB's uses to be? Even Chinatown is becoming hip and expensive.
Plus I got tired of living in an apartment - I felt like I was in Jail after a while. Very cramped. Now I love in a small house in Long Beach. I have everything I need. A boardwalk that I ride my bike on almost everyday - yes even today. Plus In the summer I go to the beach more than the one time I used to. Even at night time a stroll on the beach is relaxing. If I want to go to a museum or do a city-event I just hope on the train. I really don't need to be around it all the time. I'm not sure why some of you are so angry about Long Island or they city. if you don't like it then change. I did. I've actually grown to like Long Island again. Yes It needs more housing options for younger couples, but I feel like the culture here is sort of changing for the better.
The word "Queens" or "Brooklyn" or "Bronx" reminds me of high crime. Which is true. There are more crimes (minor or major) that are in those areas. Now tell me why I would want to move there? I like driving. It gets my mind off things. So the driving long distances thing does not bother me. Yes, by living in the city, you eliminate car and insurance payments but... Hey.. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions.

Omigawd,
Your ranting and raving about what LI lacks is so tiredsome. Instead of staying holed up in your apartment fantasizing of some phantom fabulous life in NYC, which is only a hop skip and a jump away, why don't you go out and explore what the island has to offer. You are crazy to say the island has nothing to offer. Besides the beaches, there are tons of restaurants (in all price ranges), theatres, colleges (which offers tons of social activities and events on their campuses), museums, and concerts. Venture into Huntington village, Long Beach, Rockville Center or some of the other villages and see what they have to offer in terms of activities, which is what I do all the time. Thats the beauty of living here, you have access to surburbia and all that it has to offer, which is plenty plus you are only a train ride away from the greatest city on earth.
Change your perspective, especially if you are going to be stuck here for sometime!

He's born and raised on Long Island. I lived in the city as a little kid and prefer LI. Not all people from the city will hate Long Island. There's gotta be a reason why almost all of the people from LI have had family come from the city who wanted to move to LI to raise a family.
