The only thing I've ever bought at Wal-Mart was shotgun shells and beer.

Ever notice the people who shop at Wal-Mart compared to the shoppers at Target?
The shoppers at Wal-Mart are lucky to have teeth while the shoppers at Target are all dressed up. What's the dealio with that ?

I never buy things like paper towels or toilet paper in Target. I find it's much cheaper at Shop Rite or Stop & Shop (or sometimes Wal Mart). Target doesn't have a great selection of foods, either, and their "special" brands are way overpriced.

"All dressed up" at Target?!??! I've yet to see that! It's usually the grandmother's or stressed out housewives with a trail of kids or --- better yet --- on Saturdays, you get the whole family: dad looking like he just rolled out of bed, all aggravated that he's even there; mom just waiting to spend dad's paycheck; and 3 or 4 kids under the age of 10 all screaming that they want this, that, or the other.
I'm going to have to look for those people that are "all dressed up"....

I find Walmart cheaper than Target. I consider Target more of an "upscale" discounter. However the merchandise sold at Target is of better quality.
As far as supermarkets go, I generally do not like eating packaged foods with preservatives, and mainly only fresh baked stuff. A good bakery/deli dept is important, and most of the supermarkets here on Long Island could be better. I actually find King Kullen to have a better bakery dept. Stop and Shop used to be great, but the bakery has been cut back significantly. Shop Rite is very good, esp the Greenfield's stores. Whole Foods is excellent but pricey. Pathmark is hit or miss, the Greenvale store was remodeled recently and is a big improvement. Waldbuams used to be very good but is now pretty bad. Alot of supermarkets have made cuts in their bakery and deli dept, which is bad for someone like me who doesn't find the myriad of packaged foods loaded with preservatives appealing.
Of all the large chains I find Stop and Shop to be the worst chain when it comes to fresh food. And their bakery stinks, one of the worst of all the chains. I won't mention C-Town and other ghettomarkets as they are really bad. They also are quite expensive compared to larger chains.
I have seen ads for Uncle Guiseppe's on TV, and am curious about that one, as well as the Salvatore Bros store in Wantagh which I haven't gotten a chance to go to yet.
And believe it or not there's still a Key Food, in Kings Park. Yucky store though.

Target is a good supplement for my family's grocery shopping being that it's five to ten minutes away from me, but it's by no means the main choice of my family. The two choices usually end up being Pathmark (the Pathmark near me is one of the better ones I've been in) and Stop & Shop, which are both even closer than Target.
If I have to get chop meat, I go to Compare Foods (Farmingville ONLY - you will regret any other location). The meat looks better than the other supermarkets and is cheaper, even though the store doesn't look too good.
I can't wait until Shoprite opens near me (if it even does) as it's basically a better Pathmark.

At the Death Mart nearest me (infamous Valley Stream location), they have some food, but the prices are definitely no better than that of the local supermarkets and often more expensive.
I think maybe Walmart does not want to compete in the already large supermarket arena here on Long Island because they don't think they can undercut their competitors as well as they can in other parts of the country where food is more expensive.

your wrong. walmart knows thier prices are better than supermarkets. ever why there isnt a "super walmart" on long island? It would kill the local supermarkets. they already tried getting one in riverhead but the town came up with some excuse that it wasnt zoned, but mean while, it was approved by all heads of town.
