Where should we look at moving to?
We need to move to Long Island from Brooklyn. As much as we would love to consider Nassau financially speaking that is not going to happen, so main consideration is going to Suffolk.
We will have 2 kids under 2 by August and are looking for a place more or less permanent so school district is a consideration.
I will be attending Stony Brook U part time to finish off my degree. My husband is graduating Touro Law in 1 year and is in hopes of a job in the city, but who knows with today's economy and everything if that is realistic. In either case, we can not move out too far away so that his commute is unberable.
We are looking to rent, and 1300 is our MAX. This is where the dilemma comes in. Because money is a factor we dont know where to even look and considering that we dont see a huge amount of apartment on LI to begin with it is hard.
1300 for at least a 1 bedroom, but with 2 under 2 and 2 adults a 2 bedroom would be better, i just do not know if it exists.
Safety is an issue so no neighborhoods with drive by shootings or anything.
What are some recommended towns or apartments complexes?

You can get a decent sized one bedroom in a garden apartment complex for around that. 2 bedrooms are probably out of reach unless you are talking about some relatively sketchy areas..not sketchy by Brooklyn standards, by LI standards. It's not a huge issue if you kids don't have to go to school there and you know that it will only be for a few years.

The real issue is how far you are willing to commute to work and school.

Well my husband commutes right now from Brooklyn to Touro During rush hour and it takes him about 1.5-2 hours to get there, by car. So i would say he would be willing to do 2 hours commute.

Check out Craigslist and Newsday.com real estate 'for rent'. There is a 2 bedroom upper opposite Dickinson Elementary in East Northport for $1300 rent (not sure about util. being included or not). It has been for rent forever., I pass the sign outside often as a relative lives nearby...I think the landlords may be picky (using real estate agent) but worth a try. It is listed in Newsday online....
Can use Huntington or E. Npt. train stations. Hunt. better since need connecting train to get to e. npt. station. Can take 25A to Stony Brook (or the pky, expwy). But 25A is right there.
Edited to add: it is showing at $1350 (the one w/8 photos) now (but that can be negotiated). My sister just rented a GREAT 4 bedroom house on a very quiet dead end street just slightly north of that for $1750 (word of mouth....not listed). I'll keep my ears open for you.

Sounds like a good deal, except Malishka's husband might work in NYC...
The commute would be so long, he'd never get to see his kids

Yes if the commute is too long and he doesnt get to see his kids this will not work as my husband really only works to have a family. He is a big family guy, more so than i am even into being a mommy.... so for him a job is just a means for a family.
franaissance- I checked that out, that does seem like a good deal and I like the yard
I never considered renting a whole house before. Great idea!

Good Point
There are many who do it.
Is really a matter of if you like what you are coming home to.
It really depends on your Hours.
Im in NYC frequently on business on off hours..not so bad
Were about 60 miles from Penn.
If he has to do Brooklyn...I say stay on the South Shore.

Right now, they are both going to school in Suffolk County and the husband still has another year before he graduates, so I think Suffolk would be the best place for them.
Plus, with all due respect, Touro Law School is unlikely to get him into a Biglaw or Midlaw firm in NYC (which would make it worth commuting to NYC in the first place), especially in this economy where grads from top tier law schools are having to look harder for 1st year associate positions. If he passes the bar and gets a job as an attorney 1+ year(s) from now, with a Touro JD his best case scenario will probably be on LI anyway.
