For 2 adults and 2 cats it's around $500 per month. But that includes all household products as well. (Like TP, garbage bags, cleaners, detergent, etc.)

Yes, I meant for everyone to include everything they normally buy at the supermarket (or Target or Wallyworld or wherever the majority of that kind of shopping is done)......
One thing I realized this weekend is how much money we spend on breakfast cereal vs. how far each box actually goes. I eat two kinds of cereal, both organic and made by Nature's Path. One is the Flax Plus Pumpkin Raisin Crunch (12.35 oz box) and the other is Peanut Butter Granola (11.5 oz box). Both cost the same: $3.99 per box. I never realized that I only get 3.5 bowlfuls of the Pumpkin Raisin Crunch per box! No wonder I'm always having to buy more. I'm in the midst of seeing how many small snack bowls I get per box of the granola.
Stop & Shop carries the Peanut Butter Granola (which btw is absolutely delicious, drat it) but it's the same price there as at Whole Foods ($3.99). Whole Foods is the only place that I've seen carry the other cereal, although the manager at S&S said he could order in a case of it anytime I want... it'd be the same $3.99 price though.
At 4 bucks a box, no wonder our monthly grocery bill is so high! I've been spending $40 a month just on my daily bowl of breakfast cereal. Time to switch over to plain steel cut oatmeal or 5-Grain hot cereal at least 3 or 4 days per week, and to buy the boxed stuff only when WF happens to put it on sale (S&S apparantly NEVER does, or at least I've never seen it).
It's amazing what a dent one particular item can make in the grocery budget.
My daughter always likes hot cereal for breakfast, whether it be oatmeal or farina. I try to steer clear of Cream of Wheat because it's so expensive. I usually buy the box of farina and then flavor it up with cinnamon and sugar. Very inexpensive. A box of farina is, what? $2 or $3? And you only need 3 tablespoons of it to make 2 servings (in the microwave) so a box goes a very long way! I also buy the box of flavored oatmeal for $1.49 at Shop Rite and that lasts the week. I figure for less than $10, I can buy a month's worth of breakfasts (probably a little more since the box of farina lasts a long time)
cereal is one of the things i find to be a good amount cheaper at target/walmart

You can also buy the no-name brand cereals at Dollar Tree. The only thing is, I don't think they sell the healthy cereals. I think it's only the sugary kids cereals.
I've only seen the Nature's Path brand cereals at Whole Foods and Stop & Shop so far. And it seems to be one of those brands that is pretty much price-fixed by the manufacturer or distributor or whoever controls such things. When it's put on sale at Whole Foods it's not all that often, or for more than a week; though when it is, it's a decent amount: The $3.99/box item will be on sale at 2/$5 so that's a good discount.
spend close to $600 , not including diapers and formula.
Since I need to get me some "traditional" food from back home - I stop at Patel Brothers (floral park) or Hicksville every 2 weeks.
then there is Maharaja grocery in New Hyde park.
then BJswholesale / stop n shop / MET /H-Mart
I guess if i used coupons and shopped around a bit more i could get better deals, but with an infant who has the time ?
$425/month for 2 adults and a toddler. Started to save more when I realized the supermarkets rip you off on produce. Now go to my local fruit stand and save at least $25/month.
Is a membership at BJs or Costco worth it? Do people who have these really save enough to offset the membership fee? If so, which seems better?
