Buying a home with No basement?
We're looking at houses on Long Island, we have come across a few nice homes. One in particular doesn't have a basement.
Is this a bad choice? Do you think its a bad investment for the future when we want to sell it? The house is otherwise perfect and has all the features we're looking for.

Grew up in a basementless home
I wont but a home without one.
it takes about 50% of your potential buyers out of the market.

For us there either needs to be a basement or garage. A basement is important for a lot of people and it might hurt resale

The garage is 1.5 and attached. We currently only use the basement for storage purpose, and the attached garage serves the purpose we are looking for.
The house is perfect otherwise - 5bedrooms (3 are huge), den and office. The backyard is huge as well.

I wouldn't buy a house that did not have a basement.

its personal preference, many houses on LI dont have basements, especially if they are close to water. but there are many people who WONT buy a house without a basement, so it will limit ur buyers market at least a little if u sell. me personally, i would MUCH rather have a basement, but if it was the only house that fit everything perfectly, but no basement, i would consider it

I lived in one home with a basement and two without. I didn't love having a basement. Worrying about mold, flooding, bugs. The house I bought does not have a basement and I don't miss it. I do however, have a garage for storage. If you don't have a basement, having a garage will help with resale.

I grew up "on a slab". We had a huge garage, big attic & shed. I don't think people had as much crap then as we do now.
We bought a home with a basement, it is great for storage but it creeps me out. I have no use for hanging out down there.

Personally, I don't like basements at all.

i like having a basement. I don't think it will affect resale as much if it's in an area (like Levittown) where none of the houses have basements and anyone buying there knows that's part of the deal. Buying a basementless house in a neighborhood where most do have them might be an issue, though, since your house will have less to offer than others on the market.
