Does the right or left extremism of either major party accurately reflect the opinions of the majority of it's members?
Is the 2 party system as effective as it should be?
IMO, no & no.
Oh, and "aye" to the sticky

Agreed...I find most Long Islanders to be Socially progressive and Fiscally conservative.
Thats the secret of Levy's success.

I'm with Crookhaven, would like this as a sticky. You really can't have a local LI discussion on the political board on this site, and the other local political oriented forums are a joke.

Where does a fiscal conservative and social liberal fall???? Don't want big government in my life and taxing me to death and at the same time don't care if someone wants to marry a sheep or the someone of the same sex.

I am in a similar boat to you (although presently a wavering Dem), and as Greenspan noted this means you need to look at the Libertarian party...the problem is, they come off as kooks (as portrayed by the even kookier traditional parties). Why do your views above need to be relegated to some kook party when in reality they are probably in line with the "radical middle". People with a reasoned approach to government spending, who would like to see some salve for our healthcare issue, do not like the answer to everything being tax tax tax, and do not care who in the hell wants a marriage license.
If money did not make this political world go round (so this will never happend) I would love to see a strictly flat vote for President of the United states where advertising was almost entirely restricted (like liquor and medicine used to be) and we simply ran a stactic number of town hall and predetermined "equal time" events. All candidates could visit every state the same number of times and had the same cap for direct mail spending (maybe twice throughout the campaign).
Done. For those worried about state representation in all of this, well, that is why we have things like the senate, etc. Seems simple enough to me. Additionally, you would not be allowed to affiliate with a party, you would simply run on platform.

Newbie: What does sticky thread mean?
Democrat here. Please don't be mean. There is too much negativity and mis-understanding, esp. from the Right towards the Left.
Is this post about politics just locally? On a more general level, I personally find the Right to be roundly mean, close-minded, and kind of ignorant. I'm convinced Right and Left are not just political parties, they are ways of perceiving reality. I worry about this country. I feel the Far Right's dangerously negative ways are ripping us apart, when we all need to work together.

A sticky thread will remain "stuck" at the top of every page in a forum.

I fear the Secular-Progressive-Liberal Left's fascism.
