I was born and raised in North Massapequa. Moved out of the area now for 37 years. Relatives that are still on long island are so stuck on there way. They will not except another way, Long Islanders are always RIGHT,

North Massapequa is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the south part of the Town of Oyster Bay, in the southeast part of Nassau County, along the Oyster Bay/Hempstead town line.

Is it possible that you might be stuck on your way? Figure that your relatives have remained here and continue to do things the way that they have done things here. It's called tradition. Why should what they all do change for one person who has left? Apparently they aren't the only ones who aren't accepting things.
(I'm a LIer, therefore, I am right - kidding!)
A $250 wedding gift is standard for some, excessive to others, and too little for the rest.
You have to be comfortable with what you give, after all, it is a gift and the amount shouldn't be dictated by anyone else. If that's the problem that you were having with your family, I am sympathetic.
PS: I grew up in N Mass, but it appears to have been a little while after you.

Not sure how your pig-headed relatives have anything to do with the culture of the millions of people living on long island..I live 25 miles away from there... I attended a very nice wedding at the local knights of columbus hall recently, and have also been to lavish events on the water. It is a matter of choice...

The cost of weddings on Long Island is not the fault of the people now is it? If The Fox Hollow Country Club wants to charge $100 per person for a sit down dinner is someone holding a gun to anyone's head to have a wedding there....and if you're invited to a wedding there...did it say somewhere on the invitation that you must pay a certain amount to attend this wedding? It doesn't. You give what you can. If you are the kind of person who feels that you have to "pay" for your seat at the wedding...then don't bash those that can't. Half the problem is with people trying to keep up with the Jonses.....
If you threw a wedding for your daughter and as you opened the gifts and saw that some people gave $50 and some gave $250 are you going to family bash on the people who gave $50 and insult them? I've seen and heard people do that.....
People have to learn to be nice, to be understanding, to have empathy, to care and to NOT BASH.
I've seen a lot of it in my life time.....bashing is what destroys the quality of life....
the OP just bashed an entire area by putting Long Islanders down.
