Does anyone have any experience with Assisted Living Facilities around the East Northport area. We've looked at Atria, but I was wondering if anyone knew about any others. Thanks.
Go to the NYState government website for their inspection records and ratings, I believe, the Dept . Health or Secretary of State department, AND, "GOOGLE it", for any public things about them !
BE CAREFUL, and use your common sense, when you are touring it.
But there are other things you SHOULD do first.
I don't know if there any consultants to go to for placement into a facility, but that would be your best bet.
A professional(s) trained in evaluating the needs of your loved one, is your best, first step.
IT IS VERY IMPORTANT, in determining what your loved one's needs REALLY are, and in turn, what this person's needs are, determines what kind of facility the loved one can go into. Issues such as health status, and finances, are the important issues that determine this.
In addition, a lawyer, SPECIALIZING, long term care issues, IS A MUST, to give you advice and set up the finances for the move to the facility !
BELIEVE ME, if you screw up on the finances...and it's easy to do...and you do something wrong, it will haunt you, and your loved one, for a long time to come. I speak from hard-earned personal experience about this. YOU WILL NOT BELIEVE how many traps are out there for the unsophisticated.
You can go to the Visiting Nurses office in your locality for a professional evaluation. In any event, you can call them up for direction, in what you have to.
Unfortunately, there is VERY LITTLE government help for families about this, and basically, you are left to your own devices.

I don't know what your needs are but for memory impaired (Alzheimer's), Harbor House in Oyster Bay or St. Johnland in Kings Park are said to be excellent.

Any luck with this? I have tried to research Birchwood, and no govt. info on them....
I have had some bad luck with a family member living at The Arbors at Islandia, and then Sunrise Assisted Living in Holbrook....so trying to get them out of there and move them closer to northport....
She has been at Birchwood for about 4 months now, and has adjusted very well. We have been pleased overall with the place, although my wife goes there every day which I am sure keeps the staff on it's toes when it comes to her mother.

It's sad, but it's a reality.
Could you elaborate some on the finances issue. I have a relative in L.I. who may need assisted living in the future. Thanks so much. Feel free to use DM if you like.
