There's an area of W Babylon which borders Wyandanch which is N Bab schools.. the Belmont Estates area across from Belmont State Park, North of the Southern State which I would advise you avoid. We moved out of the area after numerous gang fights on the track at Brennan High (BOCES), a couple different crack houses in the neighborhood.. and a lot of people use it as a cut through to Wyandanch from Belmont Ave so a lot of riff raff there too.

There you go.
Its weird how the towns can overlap around there.
Same with Deer Park, Bay Shore and West Islip.

There is no influx into North Babylon from Wyandanch. Wyandanch has its own schools. The North Babylon School District covers most of North Babylon, some parts of West Babylon and a sliver of Babylon.
So what do you really mean Crooks?

Brennan High School is not in North Babylon or part of the North Babylon School District. As the post says it is in West Babylon and part of BOCES.
As far as concerning the Belmont Estate area north of the Southern State and west of the Belmont Park it is a diverse working-middle class neighborhood that is in West Babylon, but zoned for North Babylon Schools. In fact many of the homes are huge and well kept - drive through and see for yourself. The people who live there are working-middle class African-Americans and increasingly more Hispanics.
As far as crack houses - you would have to go into Wyandanch, but even that area has changed substantially for the better in recent years. Those so called crack houses are being torn down and brand new homes have been built all over the place. Who is buying? Hard working Hispanic immigrants. It appears that Hispanics are displacing the African-Americans in Wyandanch.

Long Islanders still trapped into patterns of "Steering"

It is unfortunate that so many Long Islanders are still trapped in a mental state of thinly veiled racism, whether consciously or not, that prompts them to steer people to what they think are "the better" neighborhoods and schools.
It is no accident that Long Island is one of the most highly segregated places in America. Although that is rapidly changing. Remember Whites are now a minority in the New York combined metropolitan statistical region.
The irony of all this is as many Long Islanders who go South to North Carolina and elsewhere are somewhat shocked to find that their beautiful new home in that wonderful neighborhood is also inhabited by African-Americans and other non-White Americans. The same goes for the schools in the South which are often pretty well mixed between Whites and Blacks.
Some of us may be doing a huge dis-service to our children by not exposing them to diversity during their formative years. How will we expect our kids to function in the future in a increasingly diverse America.
Did you ever stop to think that maybe the kids going to a diverse school today will be better prepared for the real world of tomorrow. Perhaps it will be a distinct advantage. The disadvantaged kids will be those who went to cloistered homogeneous schools.
America has changed and is changing.
In a few days Barack Obama will be president. Before the year 2020 Whites will be a minority in New York State. By 2042 (according to the Census) Whites will be a minority in the United States.

Test Scores - Regents and comparing.

A couple of posters put up Regents test scores comparing West Babylon to North Babylon. Which is a good thing.
As I posted earlier, the North Babylon High School is the weak link in an otherwise strong district. The elementary schools are very good and Robert Moses Middle School is doing well also. The people here are working hard with new leadership to change things in the High School.
However, looking at the test scores you find that there is not a substantial difference between North Babylon and West Babylon. In fact North Babylon is at or above the state averages anyway.
Of course it would be great to see North Babylon High School do better.
I have a question, would your perception of North Babylon change if North Babylon High School's test scores went up in league with West Islip, Kings Park or Commack?

The concern with the Wyandanch influx is due to the abject poverty that envelopes it.
I think its safe to say based upon the defensive respose of the locals that N.Babylon may be the district to avoid in the area.
Best bet is to go there, drive around and start asking parents.
Remember rule of thumb with LI Schools.
Where theres abject poverty... theres problems.
