As a graduate of Deer Park schools, and a successful professional, I don't see a problem with Deer Park. Of course, some people will always direct those looking to more expensive neighborhoods (e.g., Commack, Dix Hills, Northport), but not everyone wants to work just to support a house. That's why my husband and I wound up buying in Deer Park. We COULD have afforded a more expensive neighborhood, but enjoy traveling, going out with friends, and have hobbies that we want to continue. We did not want to buy a very expensive home, and have nothing left for fun. That being said, I wouldn't consider looking at homes in Deer Park that were near Wyandanch, or on the East side of Commack road. The west side and east side (before Commack Road) are very nice and well-kept. Just a point, Dix Hills, an "expensive" town also borders Straight Path and Wyandanch/Wheatly Heights area. And from what I hear, the Half Hollow Hills school district is leaning on an "excellent" reputation of the past, and is not all it's cracked up to be at the present.
