Thinking of moving to Southold...young family
We're from the city, and want to move somewhere more quiet and more affordable. We want to rent a house, and can swing about 1700 a month in rent and it seems for space and nice house we'd need to go fairly far out. Plus, I prefer the more rural aspect of further east. My family has had a house in East Hampton for 30 years, but we're WAY priced out of that area So Southold and surrounding areas looking beautiful and appealing.
Can you tell me if there are sports and other activities for young children out in that area? My sons like dance, tae kwon do, tennis, swimming, and just connecting with other kids. They're both homeschooled so it would be great if there was a homeschool community out there for them to connect with. I know of one further west but wondering what's happening out there for younger kids.
I understand it's a small community, so we'd be willing to drive to activities.
Thank you for any information.
(oh, and hubby will be in the city 3 days a week and out with us 4 days a week, or something like that. So he'd be taking the train in and out of Penn Station. )

Southold is stunning. I love it out there.
Ill take NoFo over the Hamptons anyday.
Youll pretty much be on RT 58 in Riverhead for your shopping.
If schools are a non issue have you looked at Wading River/Baitng Hollow/Jamesport?
That commute is a killer though.
Best of luck

The commute is a big problem. There are only a couple of trains a day and they're very slow--you leave Southold at 5:40am, arrive 8:20. Alternatively, you'd drive to Ronkonkoma (1hr without traffic) and get the train there--no idea how parking is there.

At least with Baiing Hollow youre near Edwards ave.
You could make it to Ronkonkoma in 35 min.
If youre willing to come up island a bit further check out Sound Beach.
You could be waterview there for 1700

You can get a whole house probably on a lot of land for $1700 in Ridge, or in wading river(wildwood section) or possibly farm view in Aquabogue
The family we bought our house from had 5 children & they were homeschooled, a neighbor of ours homeschooled her kids but they moved to NC. I believe she worked with a group through her church & if I recall correctly the church was in Rocky Point.
I love the north fork but I think the commute would be unbearable for your husband. I'm guessing 2.5 hours each way on a good day. I think staying slightly west of the fork would give you more opportunities for year round activities for your children.
Good luck!

Agreed, Ridge would be a neat pick by the lake (youre not too far from Sound and Ocean too.)
If youre really attached to the Sound ....Wading River(Wildwood))Rocky Point(North Shore Beach) and Sound Beach would do you right.
I know folks commuting via Ronkonkoma in around 90 mins from the area.
Its more than do-able.

Door to door commute? More like 2 hours unless hubby works IN Penn Station.

Right....about 90 to Penn.
You can tack on up to 20 min for ANY commute once you get to Penn.
She said Midtown.
Still way easier than Southold

well, DH would only be commuting 1x a week. I wasn't clear--he will spend 3 days in the city (won't commute back out) and 4 days out there with us, telecommuting. He has a place to stay in the city. We will only have one car so he can't take it
