Default Soon to be BSBA grad seeking career advice

Hi, I live in New Hyde Park and have been somewhat set on applying to multiple employment agencies upon graduation, since I'm not sure where I want to go with the Business Admin. degree in the short term, my job history is fairly poor, and I don't know much on where to apply otherwise. I'd like work that prepares me for running a business in the long run.

What employment agencies are near NHP (in case my personal search misses any)? Are there other viable options for someone in my position? How likely is it that I could get consistent work from such an agency, considering the current economy?

Note if you need more elaboration. Thanks in advance :-)

What school did you graduate from? What was your GPA? What industry would you like to work in?

I hate to say it, but in this market you probably won't be able to get anything more than an executive assistant.

You're not getting a good Exec Asst job unless you have Exec Asst experience. It's not a job you can just step into w/ no experience. I make close to 6 figures as an Exec Asst.

There's a wide range of executive assistants making really good money to $25k a year. This person will only be able to get the $25k gigs... I guess the better term would be adminsitrative assistant.

I've been to multiple schools, and the last 52 credits will be from Columbia Southern U. It's an online school, which I know won't help, but I have reasons for taking classes there, and I've read in multiple articles that the rep of online schooling is improving (it better, considering it's generally more work). My GPA will end up being ~3.4.

Industry, I'm not sure. Using http://www.bls.gov/oco/cg/indchar.htm the closest ones would be:
Financial activities > Insurance
> Securities, commodities, and other investments
Professional and business services > management, scientific, and technical consulting services.

Virtually all of the industries you've mentioned are in serious turmoil right now and are scaling back their work force. You may want to look at working at a bank. It will help your lack of work experience and should be easier to find a job with a bank (as a teller/ loan officer) then anything else these days.

My advice: Sign up for the Nassau and Suffolk Police exams.

J/K.

I did a little Googling, and found a site listing these for bus. admin. majors:

  • office and administrative support
  • supervisors
  • managers
  • cost estimators
  • property managers
  • real estate managers
  • purchasing managers
A couple of them are a bit abstract, but advice on these relevant to Nassau/Queens county would be appreciated.

mikeyc4582: When you say those industries are in turmoil, is that solely due to the recession, or they have been falling for years? I was stretching to list financial services, as I'd rather not do that. Thanks.

Everything you listed is in turmoil because of the recession... and things won't get better for a couple of years at best. Unless you were an accountant, most professional or business services are being scaled back or cut out completely. Consulting services is discretionary spending, which is the first to go in a bad economy. If I were you, I'd try to get a job at a bank. You can probably move up the ladder to assistant manager pretty quickly since you have a degree, and it's a stable job with benefits. With no work experience and a degree with a no-name school (no offense meant) you have to rely on luck to find a decent position that isn't on the chopping block these days. Good luck

I think Mike is being a bit harsh on the "everything is cut off" front. The Country is in a ressession. Finance industry is probably the heaviest hit right now. Some places will hire people if they need people.

You're not going to get a real "manager" job without any experience. I'd pick some major companies and look at their openings and see what you think you're qualified for and apply for those, then look on job posting for similar positions.

As an accountant, I can tell you we're not immune to the economy either with cutbacks.

You can try a bank, but I wouldn't bet that they pay all that well for anything they're hiring for right now which I would guess is bank teller and i wouldn't bank on them always having benefits.
