I'm looking for a compilation of tax rates for northern Long Island. Anyone find one when looking for places to move? Taxes are a big part of our moving decision.
Not sure if any wesbite has a full list, on the mynassaucountyproperty.com website you can get a general idea of the rates in certain areas by punching in certain homes and looking at the tax rates there. One listing the site does have is the school district tax rates. This can give a general idea of the areas with the higher and lower taxes because school district taxes in most areas are about 2/3 of the overall property tax bill.
Yes pay attention to what school district you are going into as this determines the bulk of the taxes.
For example Hauppague is a community on the North shore/center of the Island. Most of the community is part of the Happauge school district. Residential taxes here are lower because there are alot of commercial buildings paying them instead.
But part of Hauppague is in the Smithtown school district. Very nice area but Smithtown lacks all those commercial buildings. Not suprisingly taxes are alot higher.
