When will the insanity stop? More and more good hard workers I know are leaving Long Island because they just cannot afford the taxes. These are good people that are contributing to Long Island and earning a decent living.

Such a shame of what Long Island has become.

Please see the threads on police compensation. While this issue doesn't account for all of the tax problems here on LI, it certainly doesn't help. Public servants on LI have a sense of entitlement that is not seen anywhere else in the country, and that's why we have the problem we do.

-Too many school administrations (too many districts)
-Police compensation out of control
-State and Federal mandates that are unfunded...and usually not needed here on LI
-Huge Taj Mahal like fire houses
-Large illegal immigrant population that inflates the school rolls without paying any taxes.
-Corruption

I agree with you wholehartedly -- now, what do we do to change this?

Call and e-mail your elected reps.

There needs to be a county wide move to centralize most aspects of the school system....school boards will resist until the end..jobs, political patronage will all go away, but that's what we need.

Demand that the county refuse to sign any police contract that does not significantly cut salaries or benefits down to something respectable.

Push you national reps to repeal NCLB ...it's a joke.

Call you state reps and demand audits for all school and fire districts to see where money is leaking.

Stay involved.

Support Levy's stand on illegal immigration and don't let special interests destroy what he's done because one knuckle-headed thug stabbed a guy in Patchogue.

I hate to say it, but I don't think things will ever change or get better here.
In fact, I know things will never get any better.
You adapt and deal with the changes here or die, er, move rather...

You can complain to the politicians til you're blue in the face, nothing is going to change. Sad but true. Expenses here are going to continue to rise.

Fortunately, (or unfortunately, depending on how you look at) LI'ers are very adapatable, and somehow, most of the population is able to roll with the changes both culturally and economical. The politicians know this.

While many people are fleeing the Island for better quality of life(myself included), not enough are leaving to really shake things up just yet, you'll see how fast the politicians try to fix things up when (if)we get to a point where the population declines enough to really devasate the economy here, which means devastating the politicians wallets and political careers.

That's just nuts. There's so much corruption here...Seriously, property taxes here are like a second mortgage. And for what? Look at the way they "take care" of the snow on the roads...

Look up "corruption" in the dictionary and you'll see a picture of LI...Ha ha!

It's a crime indeed!
Your jealously of what the cops get is incredible. How many threads will you post on to continue to whine about police compensation?
