Where to find zoning info for suffolk , north shore
Is there anywhere online, where I can get the construction zoning info for the north shore without having to pay a hefty fee?

Each Town (Town of Huntington, Town of Smithtown, Town of Brookhaven) has their own zoning. Within those towns, the villages which totallyfrazzled mentioned, have their own restrictions which in many cases supersede the Towns within which they are located and are typically far more stringent.
Town of Brookhaven Home Page has the Town code online; you can spend some time digging about to get an idea of zoning, but it won't tell you specifically what is zoned for what in a specific location. I believe you need to contact planning with an address. When I set out for my own permits, I had to fax my address, section, lot & block # to them for them to confirm my zoning.

Happauge is a hamlet partially in the Town of Smithtown and partially in the Town of Islip.
Smithtown is a hamlet in the Town of Smithown.
Nissequogue is a village in the Town of Smithtown.
Commack is a hamlet partially in the Town of Smithtown and partially in the Town of Huntington.
thespeakerbox, in case you are unfamiliar with the local geography:
What people refer to colloquially as "towns" are actually villages and hamlets, which are within actual towns; and, because villages and hamlets are referred to as "towns", then, many times, the error is compounded when actual towns are referred to as "townships".

http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...you-think.html may help you understand the great geographic confusions caused by non-conforming ZIP Code postal zones.
