Great music and art scene.

Mission district is full of dot com posers looking to buy a soul.

No contest.

We have them in NYC, sure. But it's worse in the Bay Area, from what I've seen--and it's not just a few hipsters or UWS posers. It's all over. The Mission District has nothing on Berkeley.

Avalon on Catalina was great...more my speed.

My cousin is in Redondo Beach -- house built one atop the other, it reminded me of Long Beach with much more expensive real estate.

Another friend was in Arcadia, in the foothills of the mountains. The smog was SO THICK that I couldn't see the mountains from his kitchen windows until the 3rd day of my visit! Once the smog lifted, it was a lovely view.

Let's not forget the Northridge earthquake in 1994 -- the 15th anniversary just passed a week or so ago. That quake was big enough to make cousin (who was living in CA for 6+ years at that time) consider moving out of CA.

Jawbreaker and Dia de los Muertos versus fluorescent colored angular graffiti? And Peugeot 12-speeds?
This is what Brooklyn looks like in 2009.

I love NorCal, but make no mistake......New York is better than California in almost every imaginable way. I love our stupid little island. I was born here and I hope I die here!!

Well, now it's a bunch of kids from the midwest who saw the Yeah Yeah Yeahs or Interpol on MTV 2 and want to live the hipster life, and every one has the same haircut as Nick.

I'm only half kidding.

And now they have all crept into Boerum Hill...It's like all of the Pearle Visions in these neighborhoods sell only one style of hipster wannabe Elvis Costello glasses...curious, and odd.

Lol that song sounds good to me. But I agree Brooklyn is going to be like that, but who says its for the worst? Eventually it will change again.

Maybe its because of the winter that I'm california dreaming. Every time I think of California I think of sun, palm trees, big houses, green lawns, beaches. When I think of NY I think of some of those things but cloudy, dirty, and grey for some reason. But once I get into Manhattan I feel like I'm home.

That's pretty much how I always felt about CA and the Pacific Northwest. I would wonder "How do these people live there and be able to sleep at night? Are they crazy?" I felt the NYC area was so much more superior since we do not have much in the way of uncontrollable and unpredictable natural disasters.

Now in the post-9/11 world, by travelling to NYC everyday, I am living the same way because we face a man-made disaster: the spectre of terrorism killing thousands in NYC.

I'll take my chances on LI living in the shadows of NYC as opposed to wondering whether I will slide into the Pacific. Homeland Security can ferret out the terrorists; scientists can only monitor seismic activity.
