does this exist?
We are relocating to LI this summer and are desperately seeking a location that will approximate what we are leaving, in order to ensure a good transition for our 5 kids. With that in mind, does this exist?
excellent smallish school district - our kids grade levels range from 1st to 9th and they currently receive speech and gifted services
nearby Catholic church
recreational sports programs such as soccer, baseball, softball, etc.
a community or development with beach rights - water view is a plus - in $600K range
decent proximity to children's hospital or other good medical services
Shopping in reasonable proximity (grocery, Target, Trader Joe's)
safe, family-friendly neighborhood with stay-home moms and kids to play with
We currently live in a kind of self-contained community, where everything we need is within a short drive so it's easy for me to shuttle the kids to all of their activities and appointments and that's what we're looking for. North shore is preferred, but south shore is OK too. We just don't know what's out there and need some suggestions on where to start.
Any help pointing us in the right direction is greatly appreciated!

beach rights and/or water view along the north shore for 600k might be tough to find. Where are you coming from?
Some suggestions along the south shore that fit most, if not all, of your criteria:
Babylon Village
Massapequa/Massapequa Park
West Islip
Brightwaters

Setauket would probably fit everything except the beach rights and the small district (it's a big district but it is a very good one). It's very close to the hospital in Stony Brook, and there is a large amount of shopping in Lake Grove, Stony Brook & Setauket.

How about Port Jefferson? Tons of shops and close by to St Charles and Mather hospital.

Where will your husband be working? (I assume your the wife, apologize if I am wrong) What kind of commute are you generally looking for? How close to NYC are you looking to be?
As far as the north shore, unless your looking to go out to central Suffolk anything with beach rights and a water view is going to be very hard to find. Also in regards to water View, what type of water view home are you looking for? something which your near the water, can see it, but not actually on it? On a canal? Or something completely waterfront on the bay, sound, etc?

You just described Rocky Point.
You can be waterview, possibly waterfront in any of the beach communities in that range
Feel free to ask any questions, we love it here.

My husband will be working on the island - middle/central, so it doesn't matter if it's north or south. Being within a 60-90 minute drive of the city is OK. Any kind of water is OK-- we're looking for something different than a cookie cutter subdivision, but we'd like beach and/or a pool. We're coming from Ohio, and housing in NY is going to be 4x higher for us, so we want to choose well.

What about as far as east/ west on LI? As far as being on the north shore, the areas being discussed Setauket, Port Jeff, Stony Brook, sound pretty good, but if he is working in Nassau, especially areas in west Nassau such as Garden City, the commute will be a headache, if he is in the Hauppauge area or something like that the areas in central Suffolk being discussed would be a very good fit.

Choose Port Jefferson. The schools are excellent and small.
ETA
If the south shore is ok too I'd add
Babylon village
Sayville
Bayport-Blue Point
