The problem is, many Islanders think that Long Island is the norm, and it's not. Heck, I believed that was so for years but finally learned otherwise, though it took me a few years to get it through my skull.

We do, but currently we can't complain about taxes or how we can't find affordable housing so we come here. Though these days I'm wondering if my county taxes will be jumping as we've lost several company HQs here. No place is perfect.

Not really homesick anymore, but the Island is a place that I love, as I do my friends and family who still make it their home. This is a place to keep in touch with what's happening besides reading Newsday.

As far as the "Charlotte Experiment", I don't know how your friends planned their move but it sounds like they could have done better with the planning. Did they have jobs, did someone go ahead and get things settled before moving the family. When we left the Island one person moved and got settled (finding a job, housing, etc) while the other stayed on the Island doing all the other support duties (this went on about a year). Don't know how your friends can come back broke from NC and afford the LI QOL and a good school district, but anything is possible.

No place like home, but there is the savings that we keep growing that would have been eaten up in taxes, home prices and utilities that is sweeter than the sweet tea.

yup nobody keeping me here....
cept, my family, wife's family, friends etc....

For the comment about non-major market salaries, it isn't really that different. From my contacts in a few places and from the people who tranfered there, the normal wage is about 90% of my current, the tranfers have kept their salary.

Yeah, they have to do that for transfers; they do not for local hires. 90% is extremely generous. It's not true in many fields, judging by salary surveys--and those are often on the high side, from what we've seen. If salaries really were as high as they are here, everything else would be jumping up accordingly--just like it does in LA, the Bay Area, Seattle, DC, etc.

Actually, more and more of them WON'T do that for transfers. How about this transfer opportunity?

IBM Offers To Move Laid Off Workers To India -- InformationWeek

Under a program called Project Match, IBM will help workers laid off from domestic sites obtain travel and visa assistance for countries in which Big Blue has openings. Mostly that's developing markets like India, China, and Brazil.

workers will be paid according to prevailing norms in the countries to which they relocate.

********

Whoever "takes advantage" of this "generous" opportunity should definitely have no debt because they won't be able to pay off their U.S. student loans, credit cards, etc., on third-world wages! They should also be prepared for a 5-1/2 day workweek (offices in India are open 1/2 day on Saturdays) and to work overtime whenever the boss wants for no extra pay above their monthly salary since there are no laws about paying OT in India.

NC is definitely overated. My family is moving back from Cary, NC to Long Island after a year because the schools are terrible. Sure the taxes are lower, but the schools suffer because of it. Also food is more expensive and it is hard to find anything with character down there, it's just big store names and no local small business owners. Bring some NY Papers down there because the only thing on the news is about the perpetual "drought", even when it rains.

But if you have no young kids, want a big beautiful house and don't mind driving 10+ miles to the super market, I wish you all the luck. And the weather is fabulous.

Uneducated folks who don't know better are the ones who move to North Carolina thinking it is Utopia. A bigger house for less money is the chief reason they move there. Personally, I wouldn't live in North Carolina if I was given a home for free and employment. Most folks in the Carolina's hate everyone from the North anyway. But, you have these idiots who see a cheap house and a little less cold than LI gets and they think they've hit the lottery, buying a house down there for cash.

Nico's the Man! is on a distinguished road
I left because my wife lives in downtown Chicago and we got married. I am fortunate that with my job I can live anywhere so I was the one who moved. Long time Plainview resident. Absoleutly love the Loop and enjoy paying only 3 percent state income tax versus the 7 percent that NY was hitting me up for. May move back to the Island one day but for now enjoying Chicago and how much further your dollar goes out here. Everything is about 2/3rds the price out here. Nothing bad to say about the Island but I do think it is somewhat overrated based on price alone. I suspect I will eventuallly move back because of family though. Now if we can just get those prices to come down about 20 percent more I'll be able to afford Cold Spring Harbor.. If not I'll probably move back to Plainview
