^^ Why would people not fare well by moving to a new location with no money? Thousands of people graduate every year and relocate and do just fine. I made the move here 8 years ago, with nothing and live fine. But I will admit that Im the last one out of 9 graduating friends that does not own an actual home.(Not counting condos). Thats LI for ya.

The housing bubble has definitely polarized the winners and losers when it comes to standard of living. Some people live housing payment free in brand new homes while others are killing themselves just to put a 50-year old roof over their heads. Not much middle ground available. As for those who move south and have no overpriced LI home to sell, I wonder how well they fare ...

Just fine.

Ignorant?

I asked you to substantiate some of your claims. That sounds rather intelligent and inquisitive to me. You on the other hand are operating on the myth of the crime-free bucolic rural areas.
I unceremoniously brought up rural poverty, crystal meth addiction, cropland destruction and the co-optation of the Republican party by corporations. You called me a name.
Like I said, don't let the door hit you.

Isn't this the 10000000000000th thread on this topic. Sheesh. Some people like it here, others do not, some used to like it and now don't. Does that cover it?
And as one sidebar, if you are going to discuss materialism being an issue for the LI region (not just an LI thing I might add) then please refrain from bragging about the tremendous size of your new home...seems a bit contradictory. And to the new Rochester native who mentioned being a "family man" and deciding to leave, know that quotes like that can be a tad insulting to those of us with nice families (even though I am raising them in this horrible, terrible place) who have chosen to stay. Your values are no better than mine. To each their own.

I moved here from Chicago 5 years ago and regret my decision. I came here for school reasons....graduated......went back to school.....graduated. Now here I am, making a decent salary on an island that has great beaches, good food, and is in close proximity to a cultural capital of the world. So why do I regret my decision? -Cost of living. It doesn't match the salaries. I can't afford a house out here unless it is a one bedroom palace in someone else's backyard or a 100 yr old "fixer upper" colonial in a "desirable" part of Selden.....*cough* -Traffic. I'm sure everyone can agree with me on this one. I avoid driving between 3:00pm and 7:00pm. I purposely work extra hours (unpaid overtime) just to avoid those who go 35 in a 55mph zone on Nichols or 347. Which brings me to my next point.... -Attitude. Yes, it has been mentioned here plenty of times. Yes, I may be some optimistic midwestern nancy boy...or maybe not. One word comes to mind when I think of Long Island......."entitlement." Everyone has a sense of it here. I try not to generalize, but when I encounter it daily whether it be at the local deli or on the above mentioned commute home, it's hard to ignore. People need to get over themselves here. Sad thing is, I see too many kids taking after their parents...leading me to believe change is not something that is coming soon. I've lived in 3 major metropolitan areas in my life and Long Island is the WORST with this attitude. -And finally....the terrible....absolutely terrible....local governments. I've never seen an area with poorer public works (road maintenance, snow removal, etc...). Not to mention absolutely horrendous city planning and local zoning laws (Port Jeff comes to mind). Basically, one big clusterf*!#k. Maybe people see this as well, which is where the attitude comes from....who knows? Regardless, I will soon be moving. I'll miss the beaches (though I wont miss paying 10 bucks to park at one), the food (yes, I'm from Chicago and like the pizza more here), and no city can beat Manhattan as far as culture goes. Plenty of good memories here and even more friends, which makes it that much harder to bad mouth the place.....but you can find good in any place. Too bad Long Island has 75% of the population ruining it for everyone else.

We left Long Island in 2005, moved to South Florida, now living in North Florida which has been wonderful! The reasons we moved were many that have already been mentioned here many times, but living here we can afford to send all three of our kids to college for four years, and buy each of them a car in the process. We could never have done that on Long Island. Also, we know how hard it was to survive on Long Island, and now it is more difficult. How will our children be able to afford a home there in 10 or 20 years? It seems relatively impossible. So we decided to move now,and hopefully they love it here enough to stay, at least they will have a choice to buy a home here if they choose to do so. I totally agree with the entitlement on Long Island, there is virtually none of that here. People are nicer, friendlier, have better manners, and are overall happy people. The weather does make you happier, and I love the weather here. Never did like the cold, rainy, dark, fall/winter/spring weather in NY. Yes, there are things we miss, but we can always come back for a week and get them. We then return to "our paradise" and say, thank goodness we left NY!!!!

My parents moved to St Augustine Beach (private home) by A1A Beach Blvd and they love it. The main drag (US1) reminds me so much of Hempstead Tpke in Levittown & Island Trees -- with the exception of palm trees -- it was sort of like being on LI.
My sister and BIL are in Ponte Vedra by the TPC. Had they remained on LI, they would not have been able to have owned a home in an area they felt best suited them.
I will agree that people are nicer and more friendly down there, but manners are a toss up -- I've seen some winners both up here and down there.
Did you take the Florida Prepaid college plan or the investment plan for your children? That's one thing that I wish NY had!
