hey, you couldn't hack it here. Not everyone can earn the coin necessary to live well on LI. Nothing to be ashamed of. Good luck!

That really is the bottom line. I'm not going to say that everyone leaves is a failure but we have to keep in mind that we live in a luxury market and the bar here is set very, very, very high.

You cant really eyeball LI towns. What would normally appear to be a middle class neighborhood in most of the country would in fact be a "wealthy" community by virtue of their w2s. The housing burden here can be agonizing.

This is why we put such an emphasis on education here, does it always translate to results...not necessarily.
This is a very competitve place to live and only the strong(or foolish)survive(depending on how you look at it).

I still say LI is by far the most complete place to live in America today.
I love her warts n all.

Virginia does have pretty good schools, however the only portion of the state whose schools are on par with Long Island is just as expensive as Long Island (Northern Virginia) Thats not the say the schools in the rest of the state are bad or anything like that, they are solid for the most part, and better than many other areas of the country. However, outside of the expensive D.c suburbs the argument can't be made that the schools in Virginia are the same quality of Long Island

She's heading to where I live, Glen Allen. The schools are top notch.

The area does have good schools, but I don't think it compares to Long Island let alone better than Long Island which she suggested (unless she happens to be in one of the poorer districts on LI)

Yeah, I won't say LI has all the great schools in the country--other places do. Some of them even outside the tri-state area! And not everywhere here has great schools, much as we want to think they do. But great schools, low taxes, low cost of living? That's a tough one. NoVA is a bit cheaper than LI, taxes are lower, but CoL in the DC area is not significantly lower unless you can live far out. Further south in VA I don't know at all, though the people I know in NoVA seem to think the schools in their part of the state are better.

You never get it all, that's how I see it. You always have to choose somewhere.

OK, the only school district that matters is the one that you or your kids go to. To say that Long Island has better schools than X is a little misleading if your kids don't go there or stand a chance of going there.

rocafeller05,
Hard for me to answer as my wife went to Cold Spring Harbor and I went to North Babylon, and our neighborhood is a bit different than the ones both of us grew up in. I'd have to say that the schools would be what you would find in an upper middle class Long Island neighborhood but newer and less expensive. All in all we are very happy with the schools, principles and teachers.

Here's a link to the high school.
