Vermont taxes retirement income and has long winters. Mamapajamas54 was talking about somewhere to go when her husband retires. She wasn't into long winters. Long winters and taxed retirement income would not fit her wishes.

Try the South - Tennessee, northern Florida, eastern Texas. All are warmer and no income taxes - look into Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana - they exempt some forms of pensions.

Default Leaving Long Island

I left Long Island and moved to Orlando Florida two years ago. I left for several reasons, but largely because of the cost of living. I remember being 25, a college graduate and working as an Analyst for one of the largest publicly traded companies on Long Island and could not afford a nice house, even with a 10K down payment. I tried entering the home lottery in Melville to get a townhouse for 140K, fat chance when thousands applied for just a few units. Oh yeah, I was living with my parents and was not going to move out to live in a BASEMENT. Or live in ghetto communities like Brentwood, Wyandanch, Bay Shore, Mastic, Central Islip, and Freeport…etc.

I moved, make a about the same, but take home more money since I don’t pay state tax here in Florida. You should see, here you can get a 2500-3000 sqt foot house in a nice area for less than $200K. Yeah, lets see anyone try to get a deal like that in Long Island. Plus its warm and sunny the whole year!!!!

All my friends that stayed regret it. One friend but down $80K he saved on a down payment on a house in Nassau. He paid almost 375K, for an old ranch that needs to be gutted. And guess what, he and his wife work around the clock, and save NO MONEY!
What type of life is that!!!!

I would suggest to every single young person, move out of Long Island. There is no future where the taxes are high, the homes are over priced, and people quite frankly have a high paced NY attitude. The quality of life is better else where.

I would say the number one reason I'm thinking of selling my house in Nassau County and moving to another state is RUDENESS...

Long Islanders are very rude people. They have absolutely no concern for each other. They're rude on the roads, rude in the stores, rude at work, rude to customers, just plain RUDE! Actually, I don't know if it's just rudeness or spitefulness. Long Islanders are just plain spiteful to each other for no good reason at all. I can live anywhere I wanna live in this country, why should I tolerate rudeness?

Another reason is the Police are basically nonexistent. They are just never out there pulling any of these crazy drivers over and enforcing the rules of civility on them. I think maybe I'd rather live somewhere where they rules of civility don't have to be ENFORCED on people.

Um, not all of us are like that. It isn't impossible for a 20-something year old to buy a home. I bought a home last year with my then fiance. I was 24 and he was 27. We're both teachers. We bought a mint conditioned house in Levittown for only 275,000 with only 5% down. We still manage to save about $1000 a month after paying our mortgage and other bills.
