I have found this to be mostly true also - many NY'ers know almost nothing about Long Island and don't want to know. It seems that Long Island likes been close to NYC but the feeling is definitely not mutual.
Kinda makes me crack up when Long Islanders use terms like "flyover states" as if they are part of NYC or something.

Why does it crack you up? LI is part of the major metropolitan area of NY.

I believe you. It's NYC that has the problem with you.

LI is a joke its a simple as that. You can talk all the smack you'd like but it comes down to this - you aren't from the city, you are a "tourist" just like us...and you are no more of a NYer than myself. Stop portraying it like you are walking outside your doors and there you are you're on wall street...umm no clearly its not the case, you take a subway just as if you were living in westchester or connecticut.
And thanks, I do enjoy NC..its a much better way of life than LI...now if you lived in Manhattan then we could battle it out, but you don't so carry on...

Not that Times Square is anything to be arrogant about, unless one had a hand in building it.
Be that as it may, I'm half-compelled to defend the Island from your ragging, just because of the way said ragging is presented.
However, suffice it to say that there is irony in your argument.
You see, a lot of the folks moving away from Long Island?
Are moving to No Cackalacka (as the good people of the Commonwealth of Virginia refer to...*delicate cough* there).

I recently moved to California & opened a new bank account. The young girl who opened the account was so excited to hear where I was from.
"You're from Long Island? " , she asked.
"Do you know the GOTTIS?"

LOL that's hilarious! You can tell who the older people are on here if they think Amy Fisher and Joey Buttfuucko define LI - it's the Growin Up Gotti kids that define LI nowadays.

Many LIers enjoy the close proximity to NYC but do not want to be NYC just as Brooklynites and Queens residents don't refer to themselves as LIers, despite being geographically a part of LI.
My parents are born and bred Bronxites, my sibling and I were born there, too. When The Bronx went downhill in the 60's, my parents moved to LI to raise the children in a safe, family-oriented environment. Perhaps this is the root of the NYC/LI divide? City folk don't want to be considered living in the burbs as it is considered family life, slower paced, kids and minivans; while LIers view the city fast paced, dog-eat-dog, 24/7 you want it-you got it.

And being the "upstater" that I am, I also paid NYS taxes because guess what...OH ITS STILL IN NY! And spare me on your speech about most people commute into Manhattan to work...Moderator cut: language removed
, obviously...why else would they live in LI? It's not a nice place to live. And don't try to tell me my lifestory by telling me how much interaction I've had with NYC or with Long Island folks, you know nothing about me....keep being the typical long islander that i just wrote about...
And for the record most of my friends are from LONG ISLAND so I appreciate those who aren't arrogant like this jerk...this wasn't meant to be an arguement about how much I know about long island it was about me saying that the "coutesy in NY (INCLUDING LONG ISLAND) is much different than other states
like North Carolina...i'm not going to let him twist my words into making me
look like I don't like Long Islanders in general...cause its clearly not the case...

If a "townie" means that I'm not from LI, I am not only proud to be from New York, but I am proud to be a New York townie
