Just about 2 yrs ago we bought a house in NC. My hubby moved down to NC that April and I moved the last week in June after school got out. We just moved back to LI this past Sept! The grass is NOT always greenier elsewhere!!!! They are extremely predjuce against northerners in NC in the working industry. The police protection where we lived was non-existant! There is so much more! If you want NC info from a northeners perspctive..pm me.

As it turns out, this was not directed at you, professor Junior, as you are not a native Long Islander. You do not understand. You may think you do, but you don't.
There is a prevaling notion among LI natives that transiency is not the answer. My friends and family cannot fathom why I left. It's almost like I've died. "Why wouldn't you want to bust your ass to merely participate in the rat race? Why wouldn't you want to be around the same people your entire life?"
Problem is, even if you win the rat race, you're still a rat. Sure, it's okay to leave to go to college - SUNY Albany maybe, or maybe something private in New England if your parents want to take out a third mortgage - but you MUST come back.
Of the people I grew up with, I'd say that I'm among only a few who did not return after college. Most didn't leave for college, actually, and I didn't either until I went to Suffolk for a few years. I've lived in several states now, and Long Island is one-of-a-kind in its shunning exploration.
That should explain my "It's a big world" comment a little better. Please take it less personally, professor.

The only good thing about LI are the beaches. So I traded the beaches for the mountains, have a nice house for a third of the cost on LI, and we have nature, and trees! And we're less than 2 hours from NYC. Been here 10 years and I wouldn't move back to LI for a million dollars

if you have the money, it's a great place to live. I'm sure northeast PA is ok and all...but unless you're an avid skier or a bird watcher, mountains, nature and trees are relatively meaningless.

Some questions:
Does the state require you to perk test to situate your septic, and if so, do thy rate the size of the house by the perk? Should the system fail, do you need to obtain new certification?
In our county their are no building codes . So, no hassles. Each county has different requirements.
Are you using solar? Propane? to run lights, heating hot water -- how are you heating the house?
We are using solar and wind to run lights, TV, computer, washer, vacuum, hair dryer(only on good days), microwave-only occasionally, and we now use a peculator coffee pot on the stove. We have to be careful of high "draw" appliances.
Propane is used for our hot water heater, stove, refrigerator, and dryer. We have a 1000 gallon propane tank buried. We have a gas fireplace but we really don't have to have use it. We built a berm home(covered by earth on 3 sides) so it stays between 58 and 60 degrees inside our house year round with no heat and no A/C.
Are you raising any of your food, and if so, what?
I will be doing my first garden and canning this year. I am doing the Square Foot Gardening in hopes that I will be successful.
Your lifestyle sounds great and certainly is 180 degrees different from LI!

We love it but it is not for everyone. We just bought this property last spring and we built the house ourselves. I have posted and told our whole story at this link:

We are considering a move due to the fact that we cannot stand being right on top of our neighbors.
I wouldn't be able to stomach moving more than 1.5 hrs from the city, tops (ideally 1hr). My husband and I both have home based jobs which makes it easier. We're looking at Northern NJ/Rockland. I could NEVER stomach the South or the middle of the country, or even too far upstate.

I'm sorry you had a bad experience in NC. What town were you in? There are good and bad in all states. When people move it's in hopes that you find the good parts. You are right the grass isn't always greener but just sometimes it is. I am thankful that I found the greener grass and I won't go back to LI but that's me. Just find the place that works for you. Personally I will take the TN mountains over anywhere else. BTW, police protection here is called "a gun".
