Yeah, I can start small, have done that already. transplant me to AZ, NC, rochester NY, TX, or any other non-major market I'd have a nice big house for much less and live comfortably within budget.

Man, I was/am considering moving into the island for the schools/library/space for the kids to grow up since we're tired of the noise and overcrowding in the city. At this rate, not only will people be leaving LI, they'll be leaving the whole NY area altogether because it's just too expensive for young families to start here. Where can we afford to start?

Native to Long Island, spent over 30 years there and moved to NC last year

cost of living was too much,. We were just being squeezed slowly. researched and prepared for months to choose south of Charlotte NC.

the kids love it, the school was pretty comparable to Sachem, great weather, great people, lots of NY'ers who were tired of 9K taxes. My house size doubles and my payment halved. we can now breathe a bit easier. We were really welcomed into the community.

the food is different, but I have visitors bring bagels and Italian bread

I don't want to rain on your parade, but both my wife and I (HR & software development respectively) have salaries well within the Long Island range. LI pay just isn't that great and hasn't been for years.

Good for you.

I didnt say it wasnt out there....but its certainly not the norm.

My question to all you ex-pats is why are you wasting your time on our board? Shouldnt you be part of a more riveting local dialogue?

I guess its safe to assume that you guys are homesick.
Ive heard that from 3 out of 4 of my friends who tried the "Charlotte Experiment" only to return broke, but more grateful than ever for the QOL and Schools we have here

I guess theres no place like home, no matter how hard you try to convince yourself,no matter how big the McMansion,no matter how sweet the sweet tea.

^^ Your right people that are born and raised here will always be attached to the island. But thats the same for any place where you were raised and have family. You will see that the people who leave LI and dont have have family here have no regrets. Its just the way it is everywhere.
