They charged me $2.99 for oil delivered a couple of weeks ago. From what I hear that's about .50 too high. Also, in late December they charged 3.29, and when I complained, they said it was a "computer glitch" and reduced it to 3.09. I think that was still to high according too average prices for Nassau.

I'm thinking about going COD. I would save about $200 on a tankful. But I would have to pay for the annual tuneup and cleaning. Anybody have a recommendation of a contractor and how much would it cost?

annual contract includes cleaning, 24x7 emergency service and automatic deliveries was $179 I think.

They are all thieves. It's a cut-throat industry, it narrows down to playing with a shark or a mountain lion.

How much does it usually cost to service the oil burner? I'm wondering if the contract fees are roughly equal to it or if its better to keep going COD and paying for service.

It's a crapshoot. I prefer to have a service contract because it covers most of the common break down parts and such, and 24/7 service. Most service contracts are in the hundred dollar range for the year, but that is with auto-delivery agreement.
I don't know many companies that will offer a "service only" contract, but it is far more exensive if you don't purchase your oil exclusively through them.

I'm a pretty handy guy with superior mechanical apptitude. I'm also broke more often than not. So, for many years I was servicing and repairing my own burner, and buying oil COD with much success, until one year it broke down and I couldn't figure out what the problem was.
Had to scramble and make phone calls to every plumber friend I had and ask for favors etc, and ultimately I had to get an oil burner mechanic to come in and finally get the thing up and running again. 2 days with no heat or hot water. Sucked.

Oil burner mechanics are their own little niche in the market. Most regular plumbers do not know too much about oil burners, other than basic repairs and maintenance.

We canceled with Morania early this year. We signed a contract and they charged higher than the contract said. They also blamed an "entry glitch" of our data. We have Nuzzi and are happy.
