I just looked at a house on Marion Street. I am from Queens, New York. Can anyone please give me any info about the area and schools? This house is not far Sunrise Hwy. I've read posts stating to keep way from this area. Can any one explain why?
I appreciate any help that is given to me.
^^ Yeah, I dont know of any part in Sayville that you have to stay away from. But I know there are some of rental apartment developments. I dont think I would buy a home beside those, for resale value.
In a thread (Oakdale versus Sayville) 61 replies, I read to keep away from the area I stated. They're saying to buy South of Montauk Hwy. The block I was on looked very nice. The house is a side by side 2 family. I wanted this house for my daughter's family and myself. She has 2 children and I am concerned. Any help would be very much appreciated. The real estate agent that showed the house didn't know much about the house and is no help.

Ugh! There are "old Sayville" snobs that say you shouldn't move above Montauk. Sure, the houses to the south are older and possibly have more "character" (and thus higher maintenance costs), but they are cost prohibitive. Don't move right on top of the railroad track and you'll be fine.
Sayville has good schools, a nice village, and decent shopping. I'd rather live in Sayville and have a walkable village than Oakdale.
babytonimarie, in case you are unfamiliar with the local geography:
What people refer to colloquially as "towns" are actually villages and hamlets, which are within actual towns; and, because villages and hamlets are referred to as "towns", then, many times, the error is compounded when actual towns are referred to as "townships".
Also, many colloquially refer to a "downtown business district" in a hamlet as a "village".
Sayville is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the southeast part of the Town of Islip, in the south-central part of Suffolk County.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Sayville in the Town of Islip is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of Bohemia and the Hamlet of Holbrook; on the east by the Hamlet of Bayport; on the south by the Great South Bay; and, on the west by the Hamlet of West Sayville, the Hamlet of Oakdale and the Hamlet Bohemia.
The Hamlet of Sayville has a different border than does the "Sayville, NY 11782" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Sayville, NY 11782" mailing address and not be in the Hamlet of Sayville): places that have a "Sayville, NY 11782" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Sayville are in the Hamlet of West Sayville.

There are some people on the island who will tell you only to buy "South of Montauk" (on South Shore) and North of 25A (on the North Shore). This rule you will find does not hold much water. If you spend some time in the area (day and evening) and you don't see any problems, then you probably have nothing to worry about. Good luck with your new neighborhood.
The bottomline is the person buying has to be happy there. My sister owned a few blocks south from Marion on a street with a number of converted summer homes. There were several apartment complexes nearby, and several homes were rentals. She wasn't thrilled and sold within a few years.
Then again, my sister is a even bigger, picky, PITA than I am!
As an historic point of interest:
The old Telefunken site isn't too far away from where you're looking.
Thanks to everyone for all the info. I am going back tomorrow with my daughter and son in law. We will scout the area just to see how far we are from the railroad and pass the schools to get an idea of what they look like. If we buy this house, hope to meet some of you.

I see your currently in Queens. I dont know if you will be commuting for work or not but you may want to look into that if you have not done so already. Good luck, Im sure you will love Sayville.
