Huntington allows residents to have chickens
Huntington allows residents to have chickens
BY DEBORAH S. MORRIS | Newsday Staff Writer 7:43 PM EST, February 12, 2009
The Huntington town board has voted unanimously to allow a limited number of chickens on residential properties in the town.
Town code now allows residents to have up to eight chickens in an area that is not visible from surrounding residences and streets.
The pen or coop must be cleaned daily and be kept sanitary, and the sole purpose of the chickens must be to supply organic eggs without using pesticides or fertilizers.
The measure approved Tuesday says that eggs cannot be sold and roosters are not allowed.

As long as you don't keep roosters and keep things clean, chickens are fine. I know several people in the UK who keep chickens in their yards. I might have done it myself if I'd had a garden, given the price of eggs.

If you do it right, it doesn't smell. Having a few chickens in the yard is nothing like the giant chicken sheds you see in the country. It's the accumulated heaps that stink (and in the commercial houses, they let it pile up and the chickens sit in it). I've been in houses where they kept chickens and I didn't smell anything.

Thanks for your experience.
Some neighbors on other surrounding street, some distance from me, have roosters and chickens.
ANYONE else, live near chickens here, and on the Island ?
What's like ?

When I lived in Queens, I had a friend whose mother kept chickens (they were off the boat from Italy). They kept the coops, etc very clean and there was never a smell.

"There are no county codes that address allowable pets in Suffolk or Nassau. Most wild animals are prohibited by New York State law, but otherwise, pet ownership regulations are left to individual towns and villages. Many, like Smithtown, for example, have codes for horses and dogs but not for other farm animals."
