Default Quesiton about Straight Path in Deer Park/Dix Hills

I know this question has been asked before as I came across something similar but I wanted to see if I can get anymore insight on this issue. My husband and I are preparing to purchase a home in the near future. We are originally from Nassau County. We both work in Nassau and would like to purchase a home here but we feel you can get more home and property for your money in Suffolk. We were looking into Commack, which is a very nice area but the taxes are insane! In the meantime, we came across an area that we are unsure about. We saw a house we liked a lot in Deer Park with Half Hollow Hills Schools. This area of Deer Park borders Dix Hills as well as Wyandanch. Since I was a kid, anytime you heard the street "Straight Path" automatically you think of Wyandanch and a bad area. I guess it's kind of like it goes hand and hand and that's what you are taught to think or may be true. I was wondering if anyone on this site had any info to share with us about that area of Deer Park. For instance, is there a lot of crime? I know you can get robbed in any neighborhood but is it more prevalant in this area of Deer Park/Dix Hills off Straight Path as they are in close proximity (about a mile) to Wyandanch? We keep going back & forth with this issue and I am assuming it's b/c we don't know much about the area. I know the school district is excellent but I'm more concerned with the location of the house. I understand Deer Park is a mixed area to begin with but any info anyone can share would be so helpful. Thank you in advance.

My grandparents lived around there for something close to 50 years (in the Wyandanch SD section, no less) and never had a problem except for a few young kids throwing rocks decades ago. The section you seem to be talking about is probably even further north along Straight Path, so I doubt there would be much of a problem (especially if you happen to be in the HHH district).

I looked in the same area, there was a beautiful home my husband and I were interested in . we took the LIE there the first time to look at it. the second time, we took our Mom with us, via the southern state. I was not happy with the area that we were driving through, needless to say that was a total deal breaker for us.

Since everyone's opinion of what's acceptable in terms of location/neighborhood is based on their own perception, may I suggest you visit the area during different times:

on a weekend (when it's nice out) to see what goes on
when school lets out
in the evening/at night, including a weekend

It may sound like a lot of work, but at least you'll get a feel for potential neighbors/activities in the area.

What do you think - worth a try??

Actually, we have been bye the neighborhood a few times during the day but not enough to make a decision based upon what we've seen or haven't seen. We are supposed to be going bye there this Saturday night to check out the area but they are forecasting rain or snow showers. I'm sure no one will be out during this. My husband keeps telling me you need to go bye on a summer night to get the "real feel" but unfortunately, summer is a long ways away. I totally agree with what you are saying though and I do have plans to do what you recommended. I just wanted to get some more opinions on the area. Thanks for your advice.

My daughter lives in Dix Hills, just one block north of the Deer Park boarder on a street that runs between Straight Path and Deer Park Avenue. She has never reported any problems except for the young Deer Park guys driving too fast down her block.

can you post the street name? That might help some of us let you know just how close you might be to the "bad" areas.

The street name is Andover Drive, Deer Park. We were also considering the streets north of that as well. I believe the next street over heading north becomes Dix Hills but I'm not positive.

Looking on a map, I don't think there will be much problem there. It doesn't look like a through street and is pretty well insulated from the main roads. If it's the house that I see on MLS on that street, the house looks nice, too!
