i agree, i would love to shop and see a store go super high-tech efficient with almost zero people getting in my way. that would be absolutely cool. just as i love atm machines for the pure efficiency and virtual unmistakability. human help is so annoying on so many levels due to imperfection, that's the aggravation is having to deal with people.

that i can definitely understand. when i was shopping at the ala moana wal-mart, i wasn't that annoyed as it had a lot of products geared toward and to appeal to the area. lots of ethnic and quirky stuff. still annoyed but not as much. lol

Alll stores are like that, not just Wal Mart. You can go to every Target, Macys, Sears, etc on Long Island and they all have the same items in their stores. If you go to another state (in your case, Hawaaii), of course you're going to find different items than you would in a Long Island store. Same if you went to a store in Rhode Island or Alaska or Florida. The stores' items are geared toward the population they serve.

The Wal Mart in Farmingdale has 4 self checkouts, as well as a self-service machine where you can purchase money orders, ATM, pay your Wal Mart credit card bill, etc.

I do not agree that Walmarts attract the "dregs of society". It depends more on the neighborhood it's in. I've been to East Meadow,Middle Island, Setauket and they all seem like regular people shopping there, the stores are neat and not messy. Middle Island may have an older feel for it but its still a nice store.
OTOH, Westbury, Sunrise Mall, and Islandia are a mess, total ghetto stores. It aint Wal-mart's fault, the stores are located in or near ghettos. Westbury gets alot of the garbage from New Cassel, Islandia gets it from CI and Brentwood.
Its the shoppers from these neighborhoods that trash the stores. Walmart charges higher prices in these stores to cover all the theft costs.
And it aint just Walmart. Target in Levittown is neat and clean, but go to the one in Hicksville and it's a mess. It's because of the NEIGHBORHOOD, not the store.
I will travel out of my way to go to a nicer store, since it will often cost less and be a better shopping experience.
If people want these stores cleaned up, clean up the neighborhoods! And that is more complicated, like shutting down illegal rentals, instead of building new buildings that sit empty on Prospect Ave.
You got to clean up the trash before you can start anew.

It's like that Home Depot in Middle Island...why doesn't SOMEONE just go through there, and clean them up and away ?
This is where the tenants should just get together, and do something.
It's apathy that kills these neighborhoods.

They have a security patrol but they are useless. They should just call the police and tresspass them.
Relocating the bus stop could help, it should just be moved to the corner of 112 and 25. That would help and speed the buses too since they could avoid that superlong traffic light at Granny + 112.

If I was them, I'd get a real security company, not pimply teenagers.
Have a sitdown with the local police precinct...tell them the problem and find out what the security company can do...legally, to, ahem, "clean them OUT" of the corner and the surrounding area of the whole strip mall.
AND DO IT....all legal.
The can't threaten a boycott because, 1) there is NOTHING else around, and 2) there is NOT MUCH, that these Predators can "withhold", other than their stinkiness and clutter.
EVERYTIME they set foot on the propety, get in their FACES, until they conduct their business and leave.
The "message" will be sent and recieved, clearly.

It's much more sophisticated than that these days. They vary the items by store, not just by region. The big chains do a LOT of research and analyze purchases. (One of the reasons they ask for your zip code when you're buying: they find out what people in particular areas buy, and tailor the merchandise accordingly.) They will adjust the mix of items (or the lines chosen) differently, depending on the clientele. Even a store like Macy's will go for a more upscale slant (in content and presentation) in Manhasset than in Sunrise Mall.
Generally, these stores have an inventory from which individual managers can pick and choose (to some extent).
