I recently went on the Walmart website to request a Super Walmart on Long Island. We are in the process of moving to Long Island, and are currently going back and forth from Rockford, IL. We only have Super Walmarts in Rockford, and they have not put the competition out of business here. We have a few Kmarts, Sears Essentials, and Targets. As far as grocery stores, we have a huge store called Woodmans, that the local newspaper said beats Walmart in their pricing! Woodmans has a few stores in the area, and is a Wisconsin based company that offers local produce and dairy products. So, why be afraid of competition? If I want a choice, why shouldn't I get one? This is America, after all. And, if we can have good competition in Rockford, why can't you have it on Long Island? I hope that Walmart attempts to work with a town there and build one soon! The Walmarts that exist are way too small, have too little inventory, and are always packed with people!

Why would you do that, cestmoi?
You don't even live here yet and you're already plotting to destroy LI property values.
Hopefully they build it next to your [future] house. Ah cruel fate.
Seriously, though, if you care enough about saving money that you would go out of your way to request a giant crime and riff-raff magnet in your town, you probably shouldn't move to LI.
People around here are used to paying out the @ss for things, at least we have nice, safe towns to show for it.

Ill tell you why: supermarkets are the backbone of the island. if a super walmart is built here: it will destroy the local supermarket industry.
I could care less if the supermarket becomes a dinosaur. theyre prices are insane and I cant wait till massapequa walmart expands thier food section. they are in the process as we speak. they are going from 20 to 60 fridges to accommadate thier new food section.

Isn't Rockford, IL the town Roseanne took place in? I'm sure Darlene and Becky would've shopped at the Super Wal-Mart.

If some of the major supermarket chains on LI had stores like Wegmans instead of being a bunch of dinosaurs, they probably wouldn't be so worried about Walmart.

I don't think they'd put supermarkets out of business.
For those of you on Long Island and who shop at Walmart. Think about your list of stuff to get. Now, does your nearest Walmart always have everything on your list? Most likely not. The Walmarts here really stink in terms of having everything you need to get. So if they handle their regular merchandise like that, their supermarket would follow suit.

I couldn't find freaking taco shells in Wal-Mart! And even though Target is better, they still cannot compare to a supermarket's selection. For all the criticism of Stop & Shop, they do have the best selection out of any of the major supermarket chains on LI.
By the way, I wish Shoprite would open closer to me as their sales seem to be the best (Pathmark has good sales too, but it's freaking Pathmark). They were in talks to open a location about five minutes away from me, but with the "Evil Empire" plotting to develop a East Patchogue location (which looks like it will get rejected), they shied away.

yes, theyre variety isnt the greatest on long island because they arent "super walmarts". if they were, then they would be able to sell a hell of alot more than you currently see. plus, they have no unions. thats 2 blows to the supermarkets. the supermarket industry on long island would crumble.

as i said, if they were bigger, then you would have a larger selection. right now, youre comparing the supermarkets to walmarts food selection and thats like comparing toys r us to walmart. toys r us's major function is "toys". the supermarkets major function is "food". walmart has a lot of everything, but not enough. the super walmarts out of state have enough food to compete with long island supermarkets.
