By the way, I wish Shoprite would open closer to me as their sales seem to be the best (Pathmark has good sales too, but it's freaking Pathmark). They were in talks to open a location about five minutes away from me, but with the "Evil Empire" plotting to develop a East Patchogue location (which looks like it will get rejected), they shied away.

this is off topic but I find that the best supermarket in a given area is sometimes the newest one or most recently renovated. For whatever reason, after 5 years or so most of these places seem to go downhill whether it be stop n shop, waldbaums, or whatever.

That's why I think S&S is one of the better supermarkets in the sad sack of choices that is Long Island. They seem to be on top of remodeling or replacing their stores far more often than Waldbaums or Pathmark.

I was in a Super Wal-Mart in PA the other day. NEVER AGAIN.
Anyway, go back to my first post here: Super Wal-Mart won't open here because the margins are too thin, and the increased costs on LI would make it non-viable. On top of that, there's no room without spending money to knock stuff down. Look at other expensive areas and you'll see the same pattern. None in Boston, none in the nice parts of LA till you hit Santa Clarita, none around DC, only 1 on the PA side of Philadelphia (2 somewhere in south NJ, don't recognize the towns).

super walmart almost happened here a few months back till the town rejected it because of its location. I used to work for a company that manufactured structures for walmart and trust me, the reason is because they will put the supermarkets out of business.

how long has stop and shop been around on long island
Well, Stop n Shop was originally Finast which became Edwards which is now S&S. I think that they may all be owned by the same parent company.

I remeber when Mel Weitz, whom owned the FOOD TOWN franchise was in the areas now occupied by stop n shop.
I dont know if the stores are owned by the same company now but changing the names every few years isnt smart. it shows customers that the previous company wasnt doing something right.

Only King Kullen remains the same and that is truly a Long Island business.
Remember Bohacks , The Blue Jay Market and Penn Fruit (Manhasset)?
They seemed so enormous when they opened up (before most of you all were born) in the mid-fifties. Before that , we only had small stores like Gemellis.

Yes, I agree that King Kullen is more expensive.
I am still waiting for Stew Leonard's in Farmingdale to open. I guess the day I move to NM, it'll have its grand opening celebration. .
Sometimes I go to that store in Plainview on Manetto Hill Road , but it is always so crowded........
