I dont know if the stores are owned by the same company now but changing the names every few years isnt smart. it shows customers that the previous company wasnt doing something right.
The parent company (Ahold) bought Finast in 1988, and bought S&S in the mid-90's. I don't quite get why Finast switched over to Edwards, but I'm pretty certain the switch to S&S was to combine everything under one name.

Doubt it. This Super Wal-Mart was right near a Wegmans and a Giant. There seem to be plenty of supermarkets besides Wal-Mart in central PA, even though several of the Wal-Marts are supercenters.

Super Wal-Mart has low prices, but they don't always have everything a supermarket has (especially somewhere like Wegmans) and there are plenty of people like me who run shrieking because of the experience of shopping in a Super Wal-Mart.

Not to mention customer service at a Wal-Mart is nonexistent.

The reason why walmart customer service is nonexistent is because they force their workers to do nonstop work and always have them doing different tasks and get threatened by the managers. They dont have the time to ask every customer about 20,000 people a day if they need help. They need to hire more people but they dont to keep the prices down. the more people they hire the more the prices are. Walmart cares about the customers more then they care about their employees i work at the commack store and management doesnt treat you like your a human being. If you have one minute of overtime you will not hear the end of it. i can not wait until i find a job that appreciates how hard you work.

Probably marketing/branding to cater to a younger demographic. Finast sounded old and dated....

Wal-Mart doesn't allow their employees to join or form unions. I remember unions being really big when I lived on LI -- could this be why?

In a roundabout way...yes. The UFCW is like a pack of rabid dogs in the NYC and Long Island area - if they think you're threatening them, they'll attack you like you were a piece of meat.

Hence the reason why it would drive the long island supermarkets out of business.

As I said before about walmart's presence on long island will anger the union supermarket workers:

Philip Serghini, a Wal-Mart spokesman, said before the hearing that the drive against the new store is a "politically motivated" effort organized by unionized grocery workers. He declined to name the union. "They are very much against any grocery stores on Long Island from Wal-Mart," he said.

heres more about a proposed walmart in east pathcogue:
