Actually, there are two within, reasonable driving distance.
With the Economy putting the squeeze on localities, what are the choices, that they have ? It will be interesting to see malls, like Smith Haven, getting squeezed after, say MACY's, folds. It is the anchor, around which, that place still thrives.
Macy's Q4 profit declines, yet tops consensus; backs FY09 adj. EPS outlook - Update
Tue. February 24, 2009; Posted: 10:39 AM
(RTTNews) - Department stores operator Macy's, Inc. ( M | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) on Tuesday reported a 59% fall in profit for the fourth quarter from the prior-year period, hurt by charges related to division consolidations and store closures. Additionally, the slowdown in consumer spending and the worst holiday season in decades led to an 8% drop in quarterly sales. Adjusted earnings per share for the latest quarter also declined from a year ago, but beat analysts' consensus estimate by five cents. The company reiterated its adjusted earnings outlook for fiscal year 2009.

It was interesting getting an idea of just how much and how many local businesses are tied into it....I've never seen NEWSDAY mention it.

I'm aware of most of the reasons people feel Wal-Mart is evil...and I happen to agree with a lot of them. But I also can't deny that Wal-Mart employs a ton of people in this country...people who lack the skills/education necessary to get a "real job". I'm not so sure these people have any leg to stand on when it comes to complaining about low wages and such. Seems like Wal-Mart (and other "big box" stores) is the only thing that's keeping these people from public assistance.

It's called "Competition"...a concept that will be thrown away soon, if certain people, have that.

Actually more of a death spiral. Wal-Mart is known for one thing, low-prices. Once you're locked into that it's hard to become something else, a provider of quality goods. Wal-Mart must keep driving it's prices down to get it's price addicted customers in the door, Wal-Mart must also keep a certain amount for operating costs to keep the lights on. So Wal-Mart takes their pound of flesh from the one group it cares little about, suppliers. One goes under there's always some other guy thinking he'll be different. Right now a good portion of the market is willing to take less than quality goods and more willing to have the current quality of what they purchase suffer just to get lower prices.
Now some of the efficiencies Wal-Mart has forced on suppliers is a good thing, like smaller packaging which saves money, the problem arises when the supplier doesn't benefit and starts to take a lose.

It reaches it's threshold, easily, so, it's not a hard strategy to make a generous profit on...especially in these times.
There are name brands being sold there, unlike sub-par, dollar stores.
Competition benefits everyone.

I shopped the Middle Island KMart in the early 90s until I moved from Rocky Point in 96. This was the Pre Mid Isle WalMart period. The Kmart was dirty, disorganized and shabby. It was not an atmosphere in which a person would take the time to browse for more items to buy -- you wanted to grab what you needed and run. How much additional revenue did they lose from people who felt the same?
After moving to Stony Brook, I shopped in the Kmart on 347 (now Lowes.) It was more of the same. Dirty, disorganized, boxes of merchandise in the aisle waiting to be stocked on the shelves. Again -- run in, grab item, run out.
Kmart was dying on LI long before WalMart came to town. WalMart might have observed what KMart was doing wrong before it entered the LI market.

And Middle Island was dying too....the epi-center of it, is that Home Depot down the road.
It's a magnet for EVERY low life in the area, with a shopping cart or a bicycle !
It's GOT to affect Home Depot's business...why don't they clean it up !

I'm just saying, that times may dictate, for certain localities...change.
K Mart deserved it....the only one that is successful, is the one in Penn Station...and NO ONE could screw that up...almost !
