What areas? Are schools and safe neighborhoods a concern to you?

I have infants , schools are not a concern at all. By the time they go to school I will have graduated from school and we will move.

Our issue is sort of weird. My husband is finishing law school, is our sole provider, works as an RN- income is 70k - ish.
I am finishing my degree part time and sit with my daughter and we are expecting #2 in August.

We can not Leave NY area even if we want to because of our schools, but mainly because of my school , my husband is done next semester.

I go to Stony Brook and i already transffered from UCLA- i can not transfer again, i have to take my degree and move on.

Safety is an issue. But HOW unsafe are the bad area of LI?

The worst areas--Hempstead, Roosevelt, Wyandanch--are really bad, and that's where you'll see the cheap ones. If they say "Section 8 Welcome" forget it--it means they're having trouble getting tenants. (Section 8 discrimination is not entirely fair, but it is what it is.)

Where does your husband work? If you're going to Stony Brook, you may want to be further out anyway--I used to commute to SB and it's further than you might think.

Not entirely correct. In my experience there are some landlords who prefer Section 8 because of the certainty of payment.

Tom, my experience with CL type ads is that when they say Section 8 welcome, it means there's issues. In a larger complex, it's different (even Avalon takes Section 8 apparently) but on CL it's not a good sign.

I know that each of my friends who have a 1 b/r and 1 bath apt. pay approximately $1100 - $1200. It's extremely hard to find apt.'s on Long Island in the price range you want to spend for the amount of bedrooms and bathrooms you want. I have another friend who rents a house with 3 b/r and 1 bath and she pays $1900 plus all utilities and takes care of the property as well. Good luck in your hunt...If you find one and it's in decent condition, jump on it b/c i am sure there isn't much out there in your price range.
