Question moving from FL to Nassau County, where to live?

I'm planning to move to Nassau County in May for the internship. I go to school in FL and this is my final semester.

Since I'm not familiar with NY at all, to be honest, I really need you guys suggestion. I prefer to live around my working place, which is on Franklin Ave., but several of my friends told me it's kind of boring over there especially for the summer time. I don't know if that's true or not. They suggest me to live around the Bay Side. I read a post just now, and some folks suggested some areas with good neighbors too. I can't decided right now.
The problem is , I have a car which I can't not get rid of, so I need a place where is not too hard to parking. Also, I don't mind to share the apt with other people.

Oh, for my budget, I think if share the room with other, probably around $700, for the studio, is around $1100 possible? sorry, I really have no idea about NY.

Thank you in advance..

Andrea

Default Understanding the geography of "Lawn Guyland"

andyanbear/Andrea, the following may prove to be of some help to you in overcoming your unfamiliarity with the local geography:

What people refer to colloquially as "towns" are actually villages and hamlets, which are within actual towns; and, because villages and hamlets are referred to as "towns", then, many times, the error is compounded when actual towns are referred to as "townships".

Also, many colloquially refer to a "downtown business district" in a hamlet as a "village".

http://www.city-data.com/forum/new-y...-glossary.html and http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html may be of some help to you in understanding the geography of "Lawn Guyland".

http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...you-think.html may help you understand the great geographic confusions caused by non-conforming ZIP Code postal zones.

sharing is kind of rough. you dont know who you are sharing with and it usually creates a problem. studios are relatively cheaper than apartments. some nice, quiet places that you can check out are levittown and east meadow. they both are near some great nightlife clubs and also relatively close to shopping areas.

Franklin Avenue in what town? Bayside (in Queens, right near Nassau County though) is a good place to live, Bell Boulevard is pretty active on the weekends. Unfortunately for $700 you might have to share a place with someone else, as I'm not sure you'd be able to get a basement studio in even the worst places in Nassau for that amount.

Thank you so much for the advice!
I think my potential working area gonna be around the executive & legislative building. I have a friend who is living around Bayside (I think Bayclub area),and she suggest me to live at that area too.

For the place, I think you may misunderstand me, I mean around $1100-1200 for living alone.

Default For those who may not be familiar with Garden City

That "executive & legislative building" is in Garden City ("Mineola, NY 11501" mailing address).

For those who may not be familiar with Garden City:

Garden City is a village (incorporated in 1919) in the north-center section of the Town of Hempstead, in the center of Nassau County, along the Hempstead/North Hempstead town line.

Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Village of Garden City in the Town of Hempstead is bordered on the north by the Village of New Hyde Park, the Hamlet of North New Hyde Park, the Village of Mineola and the Hamlet of Carle Place, all in the Town of North Hempstead (the North Hempstead/Hempstead town line); on the east by the Hamlet of East Garden City; on the south by the Village of Hempstead, the Hamlet of West Hempstead, the Hamlet of Garden City South and the Hamlet of Franklin Square; and, on the west by the Village of Stewart Manor and the Village of New Hyde Park.

Garden City is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where many of the places with the community name as part of their mailing address are not in the village: places that have a "Garden City, NY 11530" mailing address that are not in the Village of Garden City are in the Hamlet of East Garden City, the Hamlet of Garden City South, the Hamlet of Franklin Square and the Village of Stewart Manor; and, at the same time, there are places in the Village of Garden City that have a "Mineola, NY 11501" mailing address. (The Nassau County county seat is in that part of the Village of Garden City that has a "Mineola, NY 11501" mailing address.)

For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html

We used to live in a one bedroom apartment in the Bay Club--- (in bayside) I am going back 6-7 years now. THEN, we paid $1500.00 plus utilities plus parking. I am sure it has gone up since then. They do have studio's available. Moderator cut: sorry. no private phone #s here. DM instead
- they get most of the listings in the bay club. Its a great place to live. It is a gated community with indoor pool, gym, bball court, restaurant, salon, dry cleaners, convenience store and lots more...

I appreciate the advice, Kenny

I'll go ahead check those areas you mentioned...The thing is, what I am doing right now is looking on Craigslist. Any other websites you guys suggest?

Thanks~

CL's pretty useful for Queens. Rent in the Bay Club or a similar complex will be higher because of the amenities.

Other areas that you may want to look at are Whitestone, Beachhurst, Malba, and College Point. Beachhurst and Malba are pretty exclusive and expensive so small apartments may be hard to find at a good price, but I just moved out of a one-bedroom rent-controlled place in Whitestone and was paying less than $1000/month. College Point is not as nice a neighborhood as the other three, but it is a good "blue-collar" working neighborhood that is nicely secluded from most of Queens. Bell Blvd. in Bayside is a highly sought after area as public transportation is readily available and it is near shopping. Keep in mind that Bell Blvd. is a very long road and you'll want to remain on the North end of it. Anything too far south of Northern Blvd might be too far away from where you would want to be there.

If you're looking closer to Garden City, look into Douglaston. Be wary of Franklin Square and Mineola as there are good and bad parts of those towns.
