i joined this forum only because i wanted to make this point to all the crazed heroin fearing massapequa parents:
I graduated from MHS in 2001. at the time i was actually in the school, heroin use was unheard of. painkillers were definitely accessible and used recreationally. coke was around but those that were doing it were few and far between and it was kept very quiet, i really had no idea about it at the time. anyway, about the time i was graduating college 4 years later, the rumors of heroin started surfacing. Right now, 4 years later, I can honestly name over twenty 20-27 year olds that are current, former, or already dead heroin addicts. What I can also say, with 100% certainty, is that not a single kid on this list surprises me- every single one of them, with no exceptions, was severely misguided from the time we were in berner together. i was friends with some of them in early middle school and they were already smoking weed and cigarettes, doing graffiti, getting arrested, and failing school at 13 and 14 years old. some waited until high school to act out, but the road for all of them was exactly the same:
they all came from broken homes very north of the tracks (i'm sorry but this is true- 2/3 of them came from east lake school district. only 2 came from south massapequa) and had little to no parenting. they were all male and they started getting in trouble very very early on.
My point to all this is-- heroin isn't going to come and bite your smart, successful, well adjusted kid in the ass with absolutely no warning- i'm a first hand witness to this. take an active role in parenting your kids and they wont end up on the cover of newsday.

Agreed- it doesn't matter so much.
I graduated from Walt Whitman in 1999 and there were a lot of druggies... a LOT... never got involved though.

Also based on school districts... here are the stats on percentage of students going on to 4-year colleges.
Massapequa, Wantagh, and Seaford are all fairly close to one another... Farmingdale is way below the other three.
Wantagh: 73.4% (193/263)
Massapequa: 70.5% (432/613)
Seaford: 67.1% (145/216)
Farmingdale: 52.1% (238/457)
My personal fave is Wantagh of the four.. but I am biased. (Had a lovely ex-girlfriend from here.. so my memories of this place are pretty sweet.)
However, most people will probably tell you... and they are probably right.. that Massapequa has the best schools of the four.
