Crooks, you probably can't get it that far out but there's a new NYC station on 101.9 that is pretty good - WRXP. They play a great mix with some duds tossed in, I'm looking at their "recently played" list right now - it's got lots of U2 and Bruce Springsteen, but also The Buzzcocks, The Lemonheads, Modest Mouse, The Cure, New Order, Elvis Costello...etc, etc, mixed in. That's the only radio station I've been listening to lately.
I heard either WBAB or K-ROCK are giving up and switching formats soon. What happened to 103.9 out in Suffolk? They were OK back in the day...
K-Rock giving it up? I hope not. It's not a great station, but it's not bad--I usually don't mind their playlist.
Q-104.3 is the same with the overplaying. Also "Carry On My Wayward Son" and Boston (My husband: "Boston had songs besides 'More Than a Feeling'??") but they really, really like "Aqualung" and "Baba O'Riley". My husband and I place bets on longer trips for how long it will be before they play one of those. Someone at K-Rock really likes Rush's "Freewill" because I've heard it several times in the past week.
If Sirius/XM would put BBC Radio 2 on I'd subscribe. (They carry Radio 1, but that's strictly current chart material.) I miss BBC Radio--even the UK commercial stations aren't bad. American radio just gets worse and worse.
I pick up 101.9 out east. i'm in the truck all day.
I have 92.3, 102.3, 101.9 and 104.3 on the memeory settings. I flick back and forth through the 4 stations all day. It gets a tad annoying. Especially when you hit commercials on all 4 simultaneously, or 4 songs that suck simultaneously.
WBAB's Setlist:
Spirit Of The Radio
Rock You Like A Hurricane
Round And Round
Numerous Zep
Numerous Boston
Wayward Son
Freebird
Ocassional acoustic version of Plush by STP
Ocassional Sabbath, usually War Pigs or Ironman
Allman Brothers
Repeat every hour on the hour over and over until blue in the face...
I can't wait to replace my CD player.
Up until about 10 months ago, I hadn't listened to the radio AT ALL in years.

I know its good
We get CD101.9 in our cars.
The station you guys are missing is WEHM. Progressive Radio for Long Island 92-9 / 96-9 'EHM
RXP is very similar but without the Hamptons vibe.
EHM is probably the best station on LI.
Listen online....its awesome.
RCNs not bad...they actually venture deeper in the Classic Rock catalog than BAB. More like a q104.
BAB is an embarrasment.
Same playlist for 25 years is pathetic.
Every month or so I receive surveys from WBAB in which they ask you to rate 13 or 14 songs. You're asked if you're familiar with the song, whether you like the song (on a numerical scale), and if the song belongs on WBAB.
I swear that the survey doesn't vary much from month to month. Same old tired songs, some of which belong on a top 40 station, the rest buried in a vault deep inside Yucca mountain nuclear waste storage.
